A journey to a sacred place in search of enlightenment? An act of remembrance? A journey in search of meaning in the face of obstacles and hardship? Later that week we circumnavigated Holy Island itself before approaching the village from the North Sea shore, the castle behind us and the eerie screech of barking seals blowing in the wind from sandbanks in the bay.
In an adjacent pew, a red tabby cat was curled up asleep, impervious to the admiring strokes of passing pilgrims. Sporting a beer belly of heroic proportions, he slugged greedily from a bottle of wine.
A straggler, we assumed, from the marauding Viking band who sacked Lindisfarne in AD. Our final destination was the nearby Farne Islands. And it was here that Cuthbert lived for many years, clinging to the edge of civilisation among the terns, eiders, shags and puffins that cluster together on these wind-buffeted lumps of rock. We both came back with a deeper spiritual commitment to prayer, fasting, and reconciliation and the Holy Eucharist Caritas provided a pilgrimage like no others can compare to The hotel accommodations were perfect and the food was delicious Caritas is and continues to be very highly respected in the city of Medjugorje.
