A delusional young man strikes up an unconventional relationship with a doll he finds on the Internet. In a group of investors bet against the US mortgage market. In their research they discover how flawed and corrupt the market is. A middle-aged husband's life changes dramatically when his wife asks him for a divorce. He seeks to rediscover his manhood with the help of a newfound friend, Jacob, learning to pick up girls at bars.

A con man, Irving Rosenfeld, along with his seductive partner Sydney Prosser, is forced to work for a wild F. A mysterious and mythical motorcycle racer, Luke, Ryan Gosling drives out of a traveling carnival globe of death and whizzes through the backstreets of Schenectady, New York, desperately trying to connect with a former lover, Romina, Eva Mendes who recently and secretly gave birth to the stunt rider's son. In an attempt to provide for his new family, Luke quits the carnival life and commits a series of bank robberies aided by his superior riding ability.

The stakes rise as Luke is put on a collision course with an ambitious police officer, Avery Cross, Bradley Cooper looking to quickly move up the ranks in a police department riddled with corruption. The sweeping drama unfolds over fifteen years as the sins of the past haunt the present days lives of two high school boys wrestling with the legacy they've inherited. The only refuge is found in the place beyond the pines. The place beyond the pines was a bold and magnificent effort by filmmaker Derek Cianfrance.

The movie is set with three major acts. The first focuses on Ryan Gosling, a motorcycle stunt rider who turns to robbing banks to support his new born child.

Love & Death in Burgundy by Susan C. Shea

This first act was executed with excellence. Gosling's character is a joy to watch, the soundtrack is phenomenally executed and the cinematography is so beautiful, not to mention Gosling's partner in crime also manages to give an outstanding performance. The second act focuses on Avery Cross Bradley Cooper , a rookie cop trying to move up the ranks with a family of his own. The second act was also executed with utter brilliance. Cooper's acting was beyond brilliant, his best yet in my opinion including his recent Silver Linings Playbook. Cooper deserves to be rewarded for his beyond excellent portrayal of a good cop merely trying to fulfill his duties in a corrupt police department trying to profit from proceeds of crime.

Cooper's conflict with the corrupt detective Ray Liotta is tension filled and a joy to watch. The third act focuses on the son's of both Cooper and Gosling, who have both grown up to become teenagers. This is by far the weakest act in the movie in my opinion. Although I would rate this act as "good" of itself, it simply felt like it detracted from the overall viewing experience of the phenomenal first two acts.

Although it seems the overarching purpose of the movie was to demonstrate the impact fatherhood or lack of has on kids, I felt that this last act was simply unnecessary. The place beyond the pines was set to be an exceptional experience with the first two acts if it was tied up there, but the attempt to install the third act went too far. The attempt to demonstrate the impact fatherhood or lack of has on kids felt too rushed for it to have sufficient impact on me. The first two acts of themselves were extraordinary and the movie should have been left there!

It didn't need to be stretched out to achieve some extended purpose sought out by the director. Nevertheless, what we have are two excellent acts and one good one, which, in my opinion, would equate the movie to a "very good" viewing experience as opposed to "excellent", "extraordinary" or "top of the range". In my final opinion, I would highly recommend this movie for the first two acts alone.

PS I might also add that the introduction of Cooper's cop character Avery has to be one of the best introductions ever! It was so subtle and realistic. Visit Prime Video to explore more titles. He finds a world of genetic engineering and poisoning of the surrounding forest lands. An attack on the local environment but telling the good guys from the bad guys is becoming very hard to do. Tyler must decide if it is a case of murder or industrial espionage or something even more. And the cost of failure will be devastating for the forest around him.

Review - This was a good mystery but smothered in its environmental message. With Native American mysticism and the white man is the enemy of Mother Earth mantra, the mystery dragged quite a bit. At times it felt as if I was trapped in an elevator with a pamphlet shoving activist just waiting for the door to open so I could breathe. And that is too bad because there is a good mystery story here.

A lot less preaching and some work on developing the characters would have served this book much more. Apr 19, Mary Brown rated it really liked it. Chris Pine's Death Scene really sad 2017

Jeremiah does not have many details about when, how or why he grandson is in danger, he just knows that he is. And before long, Jeremiah is dead himself. Now Oakley has two mysteries to solve and not much information to help him. Like I said, so much for peace and quiet. There are things that I really liked about the book.

I thought the mystery was well plotted and well executed and I thought there were enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. I also enjoyed the paranormal elements that appeared in the book. This added another dimension to the book, in my opinion. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted mystery suspense. If you enjoy reading about genetic engineering you should especially enjoy this book. I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review. I would like to thank NetGalley and Chicago Review Press for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Mar 25, James Hill rated it liked it. If you're into mystical Deep Ecology and murder mysteries, this is the book for you. If you're just looking for a quick book to fill the time, this one will do that, too. If you're the type who rolls your eyes at somewhat-silly plot devices, it's probably best to avoid Death in the Pines.

If there's going to be unexplainable stuff going on, then get into it. The protagonist, Oakley Tyler, is a smart enough guy to handle it, but instead it felt like the reader knew more than the character. There were some interesting geographical observations about Vermont and I mostly enjoyed the "mystery" part involving genetic engineering and rich corporations.

The story lost it's way a little at the end though with the way the "real" bad guy was offed without giving anything away, visions of The Princess Bride come to mind. If you're a fan of slightly-paranormal mysteries with a message, try Death in the Pines. Feb 21, Linda rated it it was ok Shelves: Oakley Tyler is a retired private investigator who likes his life in the woods of Vermont. When he is approached by Jeremiah Smith asking him to try and save his grandson from someone who seems to want the young man dead, Oakley declines to offer any help until the old man turns up dead.

Interesting but not so much that I need to read more. I might eventually but my reading list is pretty long already. Sometimes audio books don't present themselves in the best light as I find it harder to envision Oakley Tyler is a retired private investigator who likes his life in the woods of Vermont.

A retired PI is seduced out of his Thoreau-like existence in the Vermont woods by the death of a man he just met. The mystery touches on ecology, Indian lore, greed and genetics. I am a big Thom Hartman fan, his podcast and his non fiction. But I must say there was just way too much going on in this book, political commentary, Mother Earth, GMO espionage, and none of it made a lot of sense. I wish it were better.
