It depends on the damage. It was written with such beautiful speculative components that a story of horror and violence became something more than the condition it described. And through reading it, especially as a survivor, it transformed this tricky subject into something that transcends the concepts of victim and violence.

Walters has been in this business for several years now and she continues to quietly push boundaries and reshape the world of speculative fiction with each story she writes. Each time through, I find something new, something worth sharing. All in all, "Sing Me Your Scars" is a sybaritic symphony of stories — a collection which will draw you into its depths time and time again. Jan 26, Anthony rated it it was amazing Shelves: It's no secret that I am a huge fan of Damien Angelica Walters' work, and so I was overjoyed that Apex was releasing her first collection of short stories this year.

The collection does not disappoint and lives up to the description on the back cover. She writes as adeptly at the flash fiction length as novella. Regardless of the length and setting, the darkly-fantastic, mildly-horrific is her tone, and many of the stories carry a wistful search for self in the face of unusual goings-on. Magic carries a price in all of these stories -- sometimes the price is payed by the user, sometimes by the victim, and sometimes by the innocent bystander. Real life isn't fair, and so it isn't for many of Walters' characters.

But they perservere, they do what it takes, they often but not always rise above the social norms that stand in their way whether that's modern rape culture or a historical Inquisition; the end of the world or the sudden illegality of a once-accepted talent. Some of these stories don't have happy endings, to be sure. But at the center of every one of these stories is solidly-built characters and in many a sense that family both of blood and of emotional ties is the double-edged sword that empowers us and sometimes cuts us down. It's a terrific collection. Dec 15, J.

I was given an electronic copy of this book by the publisher, in exchange for an honest review. He also rapes and beats the narrator ritualistically. Always together, the women that comprise the collective voice of the body band together, but meekly under the constant threat of beatings, rape, and having their individual voices silenced by having their body part removed and replaced. Two factors disrupt the cycle. Firstly, rot creeps into the body again starting at the wrist sutures. Then, the doctor covets the beautiful piano playing from a young woman at a party he hosts. Mar 12, Nicole rated it it was amazing. Haunting, colourful, filled with anguish and tears and sometimes even hope, Sing Me Your Scars is a wonderful collection of short stories by the deeply talented Damien Angelica Walters. Each story took my breath away. They all were filled with such emotion that it was hard to separate myself from each character and what they were going through. If I had to choose a favourite story, it would be Girl, With Coin, about a young woman who can cut herself open but the wounds heal quickly, so that she does not die. She uses her talent as an art exhibition but the real pain is in her childhood and her relationship with her mother. They Make of You a Monster was another lovely tale about a kingdom that holds its women with magic in prison until they can break them, making them use their power for evil.

It centers on Isabel who, by the end, finds out what her twisted magic can really be used for. Running Empty in a Land of Decay is a quick little tale of life after the zombie apocalypse. Not scary but not not scary. It is totally worth it to just buy this book today. Your life will be so much better after reading! There are not enough words to describe how much I loved it. Jan 29, E. I know zee author, but that doesn't take away from the delight in this book. Jan 29, M Griffin rated it it was amazing.

A very fine collection, beautifully written, harrowing and painful. Damien Angelica Walters is one of my favorite writers. Dec 10, S. Budd rated it it was amazing. Composed of three parts it contains 20 stories of suffering and sorrow, of misfits and damaged people. These are the stories of a dark underworld that we have all glimpsed upon for a few brief moments but for some unlucky souls it is their home.

I loved the range of stories here, there are no two alike and whilst reading this starling collection I read slowly to enjoy every line. These are dark magnificent tales that you will want to read again and again. What's really magical about these tales is with how immersive they are. Straight away you feel like you in their world feeling all the sorrow and despair they feel.

The prose is as beautiful as it is horrific. I've only come across a few writers who can write such vivid imagery. Highlights for me in this collection include Sing Me Your Scars, a Frankenstein tale about a young woman who has been formed from other women's body parts and kept in the shadows by her maker.

This tale really sang to me and I would love to see it expanded into a novel. Paskutinis Iliuzja The Last Illusion is about the last magician in Lithuania caring for his sick daughter during occupation was absolutely heartbreaking, poignant and far too real. Melancholia in Bloom is a tale of a woman struggling to stay who she is and remember the memories what make her. She's trying to pass down an important family secret,a box of magic and despairs her message will never be found.

Running Empty in a Land of Decay is simply the best post apocalyptic tale I've ever read, and The Taste of Tears in a Rain Drop serves to remind us that it is not just women who suffer. Shall I Whisper to You of Moonlight, of Sorrow, of Pieces of Us is a darkly haunting tale of woman waiting for the man she refused to let go.

What a darkly beautiful collection of stories! Transcending narrow genre labels, graceful even at their most disturbing, the tales in this collection will linger long in my memory and, I am certain, reward frequent revisiting in the future. Oct 17, Clint rated it liked it Shelves: I picked this collection up based upon a review I read earlier in the year at Cemetery Dance a magazine of horror, once dedicated almost as a fan magazine of Stephen King, now more branched out.

As a collection, I found it a mixed grab bag. Some stories were great, some felt slight and nearly incomplete. Of the 20 stories in the book, about half felt like they were stories she could not find a publisher for. When she is hot, her stories boil, when she is not, they were a simmer at most. I did enjoy some stories enough that I will look for her in the future. Those are the only ones that stick in my mind, the rest being too ephemeral to leave anything behind. Oct 15, Scott Hallam rated it really liked it. Dark, emotional short stories that wrench your heart. Damien Angelica Walters is a master of her craft.

It was just so beautiful, I went back and read it a second time, which for a self-professed book addict who is always looking for her next fix, is an unheard of way to spend valuable reading time. I also felt that the last three stories, 'Paper Thin Roses of Maybe,' 'Grey in the Gauge of his Storm,' and 'Like Origami in Water,' closed the book out with a triple whammy of heart-break and beauty.

Couldn't have asked for more out of this collection. May 15, Caragh rated it liked it Shelves: I received this collection free from librarything early reviewers club in exchange for an honest review. Damien Angelica Walters is a new author to me, and to be honest, a bit of a mixed success.

Mar 22, Elizabeth rated it really liked it Shelves: I swear to you. Nashoda Rose has created a fantastical world of Scars, Wraiths, Witches, and a whole glossary of characters and terms to keep you engrossed and amazed! As the book begins, we meet Balen and Danni. They are being held captive. They are being tortured by an evil vampire. Balen gives himself to the vampire in order to spare Danni. Fast forward two years Danni doesn't remember anything except that she has experienced some kind of pain.

She is an artist and she spends hours painting the same man over and over again. Although she isn't clear why this man is important to her, she is unable to let his face be erased. But it was tearing me apart. Every time I looked at him, another piece of me broke off. She cares for nothing but the solace of being alone! She doesn't quite know who he is and yet she knows exactly what he means to her. He was the key and, yes, the lock. Because he could lock me to him just with his eyes.

He gave up his life and betrayed his race in order to protect her. He returns to see her one last time before he is to turn himself in for the crimes that he has committed. In addition to his sins, Danni is human. Therefore, they have no future together. Still he cannot help but come to her one more time. Jesus, the need to have her was like an inferno that was impossible to extinguish. It was so overpowering that it was unnatural. She feels safe when they are together.

They share a night of passion and everything slams into her like a mack truck! I knew this like I knew my own name. Will he be sent to death? Will he be exiled? Will he ever see Danni again? As the truth is revealed, Danni struggles to accept the magic and power that exists in this world. Danni and Balen are connected. As he is pulled apart, Danni suffers.

She was part of me. I needed to hold her. Although it is a bit daunting to sort out the individual character's role and how they contribute to the plot, the story is so inviting that you are willing and able to just "enjoy the ride". The connection between Bale and Danni is so strong and beautiful that you are on the edge of your seat rooting for them to get their HEA! Balen is your typical Alpha Male who is intense about his protection of his "little one". At times, Danni gave me a bit of a headache with her insecurities and overall inability to give herself over to Balen completely.

The journey wasn't always easy but the end result was full of satisfaction! If you love me, I can survive what I have done. Just tell me, my love. Nashoda Rose is such a gifted author. She has created a mystical world that you cannot help but want to explore. Not only does Stygian leave you breathless, the promise of what is to come evokes the best kind of anticipation.

Rose will continue to write and I will undoubtedly continue to load my kindle with her work. I will be anxiously waiting for what is to come! And I want your happy place to include me. Balen was a Scar; an immortal warrior whose job was to protect humans from their enemies. I read very little of paranormal books but when I do, I want them to be full of actions on and off the bed. Stygian successfully satisfied both of my needs. When I first read Take the first book in Scars of Wraiths series , I felt it was very little on the paranormal side and there were confusion with the world and the purposed of the different species. Stygian answered all of the questions I had.

The four Elemental Wraiths remained in the realm of, what I referred to as, a fantasy land. Because what you saw was not always what it was. The Wraiths were creative when it came to their home. The readers were introduced to the different realms and the different species including their background origins and their purposes. There were a lot to take it but I enjoyed learning about it all. I absolutely love the premise of a human and an immortal. When people come from two different worlds in this case literally things are bound to get intriguing.

And I love how we got to learn about the worlds through their eyes.

Balen was definitely something. From the beginning he was such an enigma. He made me all hot and needy hahah! Maybe it was what he did and his resistance.

He softened towards the end but I still love him. I like Danni too. I love seeing how she learned and embraced the new world even when it was too hard to handle. I love that there were so many characters in the books and love the multiple POV. I always like when a story focuses on broader subject other than the two main characters. In this book we also got the side story of Waleron and Delara. What do you want with me? I fell in love with him the moment he uttered his first word. My favorite scene in the whole book was the transformation scene.

That was crazy and pretty intense. Overall, I really enjoyed the world of the Scars and the Wraiths, and really looking forward to the next book Tyrant which will be about my new favorite asshole, Kilter. Special thanks to Nashoda Rose for putting up with my Kindle-less situation thus ARC-less and provided me with the copy upon released. Thank you for being so understanding.

My private note for this book is so long, barely half fit in the box! View all 27 comments. Mar 22, Dee Montoya rated it it was amazing Shelves: If you read Take you are probably already a fan of this unique series where Vampires are evil and the Scars are always hard at work fighting the evil creatures and protecting the human race. Danni was kidnapped two years ago and even though she really doesn't remember anything about the incident her life hasn't been the same ever since.

She's not the happy and outgoing girl she once was; now she's always by herself, hiding behind her work and avoiding all contact with the outside world. The only thing that is familiar to her anymore is the image of a beautiful and mysterious man that is always present in her paintings and in her dreams. His deep green eyes is the only thing that makes her feel safe in a world where she feels out of place.

Balen was there to suffer right next to Danni, he fought as much as he could but his powers were stripped from him and the only thing he was able to do in order to save her was to sacrifice everything he is and represents as a Scar. He paid the ultimate price to protect her from the evil Vampire and now he has no choice but to run and hide from her and his people. The bond that was formed between Danni and Balen was simply unbreakable and it doesn't matter the distance or how much time passes by they just can't be away from each other, but the consequences to pay if they want to be together are too extreme and seem almost impossible to handle.

Do they have what it takes to accept their harsh reality and fight everyone and even themselves in the name of love? I already had a deep fascination for this series but this book just took my obsession to another level. I loved the multiple POV's and every character was even better and more interesting than the next.

As the story progressed I kept craving for every character to have their own book, I simply couldn't get enough. I love Nashoda Rose's writing style and world building, this story is brilliant. I highly recommend it!!! View all 13 comments. It's official, Scars of the Wraiths is one of my favorite paranormal series ever. Their compeling and meticulously developed world, along with the amazing, likeable and sassy characters and of course Nashoda's writing, have me hooked for good.

This is a great book, i have to admit i was playing the little detective at first, trying to compare what i knew from Take, with all the new informations in Stygian, and that was definitely fun -mostly when a name of a character i knew, came up in 4,5 Stars! This is a great book, i have to admit i was playing the little detective at first, trying to compare what i knew from Take, with all the new informations in Stygian, and that was definitely fun -mostly when a name of a character i knew, came up in even in passing- but after a while the story captivated me completely and i lost track of everything else.

Stygian is filled with twists and secrets. Big ones, dangerous and lethal. The moment you think you came to the end, a new storyline sprungs out of nowhere, with even more complications than the last one. Seriously Scars can't catch a break. Balen and Danni, have a sweet story, tragic and in the end liberating. They go through some unimaginable hardships, at some point i couldn't believe what they had to do in order to have a chance to survive.

Their bond was something special and beautiful. They may be the heroes in this instalment, but Waleron and Delara, surely steal the show as we get to know them and their shared past more and more, also Kilter towards the end demands his own share of attention. I liked this story a lot, but it was more of an intro than anything else. An intro to amazing stories that i can't wait to dive into.. Balen and Danni of course have the lion share, it's their story after all.

I liked them so much. He is adorable, cold-hearted and tactical but still, i loved that tiny detail. Even if he had pills in it and not candy. Not as natural, to a degree, as it turns out, but no less real regardless. I love Danni's journey from her horrific experience to being who she became.
