The author took a risk by self-publishing this novel but it was a risk that paid off. Beautiful descriptive writing, though sometimes the point gets lost in the prose.

The Bondmaid - Wikipedia

A tragic story of love divided by class and wealth. Couldn't sleep after finishing it, I was still so wrapped up in the story. Nov 24, Myra rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: I wondered has it ever happened?!!! It's terrible knowing how women were treated, how women have no value! And Catherine Lim I love her, that is what called feminist She is smart anyway, talkative in important stuffs. Apr 21, Kirsty rated it it was ok Shelves: I had hopes that it would resemble work by Lisa See or Amy Tan, but was unfortunately rather disappointed in this respect.

I've said this about a few books of late, but The Bondmaid felt purposely complex with regard to its long sentences, and range of less common vocabulary; essentially, it was overwritten. A lot of the sentences, despite their length, did not say a great deal; for instance I chose Catherine Lim's The Bondmaid for the Singapore stop on my Around the World in 80 Books challenge.

A lot of the sentences, despite their length, did not say a great deal; for instance: The dialogue, too, felt unimaginative and matter-of-fact; the whole novel felt ultimately clumsy. The Bondmaid flits about far too much in time, and whilst I did find the cultural information interesting, I felt from the beginning that the story could have been far better handled than it was in actuality. You can probably see now why I gave up on it. May 15, Raechel Henderson rated it it was ok. What could be an interesting story suffers from poor writing and a confusing ending.

The sotry is saved from a one-star rating by the tidbits of Singapore folk and ghostlore. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. I could live without this book on my bookshelf. I found the ending a little rush and What I didn't like would be the cheesy part between Goddess and the Sky God, there were way too much sexual scenes and I found the character a little naive and annoying She's a most straight forward person. Having It was so-so Having more nemesis and less friends, the main character slowly turns to Sky God and Goddess to which she talks about her problems to.

She relies on Goddess to deal with her problems Oct 07, Jacq Daisy rated it really liked it. A tragic love story. The story got me going on and on, as if i was together with Han. Catherine Lim's writing made my emotions reacts with Han's; anger, jealousy, love, sadness and happiness. The descriptive words used were able to make me do a time-travel and see what happens around Singapore back in s, just like what my grandmother had described to me. A good piece of word, however, as i was not used to reading narrative books, i was lost in the A tragic love story. A good piece of word, however, as i was not used to reading narrative books, i was lost in the middle of the story, but afterall, i got the picture.

I loved the beginning - the child's voice and the choppiness of child memory.

Of course, then it probably wouldn't have been made into a movie in China! Jul 30, Dawn Lee rated it liked it. I liked the story, from a little girl who was abandoned by her own mother, she grew up with the young master who she fell in love with. I loved how her love for m never died throughout the hardships she went through.

What I didn't like though, was that the ending seemed rather rushed. Although i still managed to understand the story and felt extremely sad , i wished the ending was deeper. Jul 27, Yeoh Lingxuan rated it it was ok. A very disappointing book given Catherine Lim's reputation of being sharp in her writing. I can't really understand the main character in this book and how stubborn she was.

Also, the young mister was a disappointing character with no backbone of his own. Catherine Lim's description of some Chinese God being rape was Disgusting. Mar 08, Rukiya rated it it was amazing.

Renata Tebaldi & Gino Bechi: Ciel! mio padre!

I read this book probably 15 years ago, but it has stuck with me as one of my favorites. It made me laugh and cry. It made me happy, sad, angry and excited. Catherine Lim did a great job of painting a picture and drawing me in. I connected with the characters and felt for them. I would like to read this book again. Feb 18, Becki Basley rated it it was amazing Shelves: This is the second book that I have read by this author and will be my last ONLY because if she has more books out there my library doesn't have them.

I love this author! Just as with her other book that I read, she captures your interest in the plot and there you are hopelessly lost in the lives of the characters. Sep 04, Yvonne rated it really liked it. A true depiction of the olden times. A lot of research has apparently been put into preparation for the writing of this book.

Some of these superstitions are still being practised in this day and age. Despite the ominous feeling that accompanied me throughout the book, I thoroughly enjoyed the storytelling and fairytale quality - which is impressive since I don't usually enjoy such trajectories in stories. Dec 21, Goh Jiayin rated it it was ok. My opinion for this book Not so straight forward and it gets a little confusing toward the ending. Somehow reality got mixed up with dream to the extend I could not differentiate what is happening.

Apart from that, it is okay. Jul 25, Melissa rated it liked it. I remember liking this. Will have to re-read to see if it lives up to the hype in my memory. Sep 29, Emily Pinto rated it really liked it. Represents a turning point in the writing of Catherine Lim. May 06, Nurul Akmar rated it really liked it. Jan 18, Julie rated it did not like it. The Bondmaid by Catherine Lim Not really sure about this one. Took me about pages to get into, out of It was very in-PC, not that I mind that but I can't tell whether it was deliberate or accidental, which does matter.

Han, though, has never forgotten him. Eventually, the two become lovers, but when they're discovered, Han, now pregnant, is forced to leave. She gives birth to a son, who's taken from her and replaced with the baby girl Wu's wife has just borne. Pulp fiction with an exotic gloss.
