How does this book differ from the first in the series? There are still strong characters and lots of humor. But it's my hope that I've also created a better mystery with more suspects, more possibilities, and more reasons to stay up late reading just to see what happens next. Jake always has more work to do Fortunately, you don't have to read the books in order.

There's a story that runs through them, but each works as part of a longer story or by itself. He can be found at PhilEdwardsInc. Would you like to tell us about a lower price? Things aren't going well for Jake Russo. He's been transferred from Sarasota to New Orleans, and he's had to leave his reporting beat and girlfriend behind. Now he's a lonely food critic--not the best job for a man who's on a diet. But things get worse when a mysterious death occurs at the trendiest new restaurant in the city. Jake has to explore the world of traditional New Orleans cuisine, brave the new frontier of "molecular gastronomy," and handle the police in order to solve the case.

His octogenerian cameraman tags along for the ride and discovers his own new talents. As sweet as a drive-thru daiquiri and as strong as a Hurricane, this light mystery is cooked to perfection. Read more Read less.

They send him to New Orleans to be a food critic of all things. Fortunately for the reader, they've also assigned his geriatric sidekick Gary to go along as Jake's photographer. The Jake Russo books are a tad old fashioned in their approach to the murder mystery and the reader may well puzzle out the ending long before our heroes do, but the relationship between Jake and Gary keeps it very fresh.

Jake Russo Mysteries Series by Phil Edwards

Gary's propensity for saying exactly the wrong thing, combined with Jake's native insecurities especially where it comes to the dames make for very entertaining reading. This was the first book in the Jake Russo series that I read. As soon as I finished it I started reading "Retirement can be murder" which is actually the first book in the series. The books revolve around Jake Russo who is a reporter for a NY newspaper and his strange and totally endearing photographer Gary.

So, I was happy to find a fun mystery book that took place in New Orleans. He is not very happy about the move as he left his wonderful girlfriend Mel behind nor is happy about being a food critic. Jake recently lost a lot of weight and New Orleans food, though delicious, is probably not the best for the waistline.

So, Jake and Gary are loose in New Orleans. They are invited to the opening of a fancy new restaurant. But, something horrible happens at the restaurant There are a few cool twists and surprises along the way too. She is a fantastic counterpart to Gary. Check this series out!

One person found this helpful. The main character is a food critic who knows nothing about food. Of course the author doesn't know anything about food either. Key premise in the story spoiler alert there is only one classic recipe for Gumbo. All however, begin with a roux.

Gumbo is made several times in this book and never with a roux. The side kick's malapropisms are just foolish especially since we are supposed to believe he is a world renowned blogger. No one acts in a way that I would believe anyone would act. The author acts like he hates New Orleans has no understanding of its culture or its food. It's not the very worst mystery I've read but I was wishing for a story that took me to NO and celebrated it's cooking and this book just was not that.

As far as light mysteries go, this one is fun and entertaining, well written for a bit of quick reading. Don't expect great literature, but sometimes we want to just be entertained. The plot was creative and about as non-bloody as a murder mystery can be. Poor Jake Russo is somewhat of a loser, but really likable. For being a fairly smart guy, he sometimes acts pretty stupid.

I really, really cheered him on. And did he get what he wanted in the end? Want to Read saving…. Want to Read Currently Reading Read. Refresh and try again. Open Preview See a Problem?
