In the 60's there was a great conflict between the main-stream culture and the emerging counter-culture. Also, I actually met someone who told me his story of living during that time and the plot-line of Pale Tides is loosely built on his true story. So, I attempted to capture the conflict and the ideas at play. It is a contrast between high unattainable idealism versus relativistic cynicism. But it also goes deeper by exploring themes of religion and finding God.

And, it doesn't only deal with the past. I also brought it forward to see how the culture of that time has worked its way out into the modern day.

Students are demanded to maintain near-impossible standards of "holiness". He becomes disillusioned, and he turns to the counter-culture, a universe swirling with loose sex, racial tensions, and Jesus freaks.
Within the story I imbedded a present-day narrative with a much older and wiser Robert travelling along the Pacific coast on his way toward a shocking revelation. In terms of style I tried to keep the story reflective, imbedded with moments of humour, with the world seen through the perspective of that time. The story also has some unpredictable moments which I hope will keep readers on their toes. And I know that the story has some controversial themes which will rankle some readers.

However, the sinuous division of its face and the piercing of each section is also reminscent of the Yin-Yang symbol. In ancient Chinese philosophy the concept of Yin-Yang represents the two contrasting forces of life in a harmony of opposites, by which existence is seen as a dynamic process of complementary, interdependent principles alternating in space and time such that cosmic time is seen as rhythmic.
Within the harmony of Yin-Yang all things are related so that man is in unity with Nature.

The infinite repetition of the tides - of which Hepworth would have been especially aware living by the sea - might be seen to encapsulate the essence of such a natural rhythm. Though Hepworth described herself at that time as an atheist letter to E. Ramsden, nd [], TGA , there was considerable interest in Eastern philosophy and religion amongst artists in St Ives during the s. In particular, her close friend Bernard Leach had had direct contact with Eastern thought since the early years of the century and was a practicing Baha'i.
Taoist philosophy - to which the concept of Yin-Yang is fundamental - was of particular current interest to younger artists such as Bryan Wynter and Sven Berlin with whom Hepworth associated. It is likely that she would have been conscious of the similarity of Tides to the Yin-Yang symbol and one might, therefore, speculate that the title was intended to have more metaphysical resonances.
The concepts of harmonious interdependency and the unity of man and nature were certainly consistent with her personal philosophy. Main menu additional Become a Member Shop.
