Honestly I always though U-God was the weakest lyricist in the group early on, but I noticed he started to pick it up especially on a lot of the earlier 's projects. Now after reading this i know why. Not even he was confident of his early work. After reading this actually listening to the audio version in his voice I feel like a know a lot more about one of the lesser known Wu brothers.

I also learned a lot about the early years before the Wu and what has led to there weak ass work of recent years. This is a good Book. Know I'm going to give some attention to the U-God solo projects I missed. What a journey U-God had. His raw, uncompromising stories about growing up were interesting and put you on the streets with him. I was entertained by the book, so I give it three stars for that.

I have a ton of respect for what he went through growing up in the projects and that stuff is fascinating. However, there were so many times in this book where I found myself thinking "wait, what? How this really benefitted him in some way is not demonstrated, but is referred to repeatedly.

  • Throughout the book, he tries to have it both ways. Claiming some type of enlightenment, but then saying things in an ignorant manner. Seems like the editor could've done a better job keeping things coherent and cutting some of the repetitive statements. The part telling about the radio station Hot 97 demanding they play a concert or have their songs pulled doesn't make sense.

Maybe they did do this, but a credible case isn't made. He goes on to say how Biggie had just died a short time before this It sounds like there was probably just some unfortunate technical difficulties, not some bizarre conspiracy. If you want to make such a claim, provide supporting information. A good story could've been told with the facts, but we're given a half-ass account. Why not spend a little more time, talk to a few people who were involved and piece together what really happened?

I enjoyed reading about the genesis of Wu-Tang, albeit only a small part of the story. It makes me want to go back and listen to their classic stuff. Ultimately though, the story told here fades into a big bummer. I saw U-God interview on the breakfast club and knew I had to read this book. Growing up listening and reading articles about the Wu was awesome and this book made everything clear from the rhymes I memorized from repeated listens to the WuTang Clan.

U-God was honest about himself which made the book even more authentic as he shared stories about his upbringing and the clan as a whole. Good read with great stories. I think you will enjoy it as well. I am a really big Wu-Tang fan. I have enjoyed all of the Clans individual albums also. U-God impresses with this book. The product of rape, he grows up in a series of unforgiving projects where physical violence is omnipresent, and a future studded with crack, guns and tragedy pretty much inevitable.

He and the rest of the Wu were absolutely desperate to leave the charnel pit that was Park Hill behind, and most of Raw is a catalogue of how, why and where Hawkins dealt drugs and survived. His two-year-old son is used as a human shield by another drug dealer and is shot in the kidney.

Raw: My Journey into the Wu-Tang

No one from the Wu betrays much sympathy as Hawkins abandons his duties to rush to his hospital bedside. A breakdown, sobriety and therapy have had a role in the making of this memoir, which should have an audience in hip-hop fans and policymakers alike. Topics Music books The Observer.
