Szerb was on my vague list of authors to investigate at some point, but a friend's review made clear that this was definitely the first of his books I should read - and just to seal the deal, she then kindly sent me her copy. Still, it's no bad thing for a book to be Foucault's Pendulum recast with a bunch of Wodehouse characters who've picked up bad habits behind the master's back. A wonderful writer who died in a concentration camp in In fact, the book is a gentle but insightful satire on the mores of the s and ls, spoofing the British, the Welsh, the Irish, Europeans in general, and especially the British class system. It can be characterized as a gothic fantasy detective story.

This veneer of civilization overlays the dark symbolism of the primeval Welsh forest and the even darker workings of those immersed in occult practices. What really happened in that strange hut in the woods? People died, we know, but who was the perpetrator? Readers must decide for themselves. Amusing and ironic inter-war Hungarian take on occult themes - post-modern well before its time. Not quite a master piece but very interesting with some affectionate insights on how others saw the British - their class system, their literature, their national character, their empire and their 'stiff upper lip'. Ad un ricevimento conosce il bizzarro Earl of Gwynned, nobiluomo gallese della stirpe dei Pendragon, i cui antenati avevano avuto a che fare con i Rosacroce: Szerb quindi infarcisce il romanzo di richiami ai testi rosacrociani, di descrizioni del pensiero di alcuni dei principali protagonisti di quel movimento, occupandosi in particolare di Robert Fludd, fisico, astrologo ed occultista vissuto a cavallo tra XVI e XVII secolo, autore di numerosi trattati in difesa dei rosacrociani, che Szerb immagina abbia vissuto a lungo nel castello di Pendragon al servizio del Gran Maestro della setta.
Alcune pagine del libro sono dedicate a riportare integralmente una parte delle memorie di Lenglet de Fresnoy, occultista del XVIII secolo di cui il protagonista recupera il manoscritto originale. Nel romanzo fanno la loro fugace apparizione anche altri irregolari dei secoli passati, quali Casanova e Gilles de Rais. La risposta di Szerb a questo stato di cose, come emerge da questo romanzo, si potrebbe definire consolatoria: Oh man, I devoured this. This was a book that just kept me on the edge of my seat, while putting a smile on my face at the same time.
See, until now, my experience with Hungarian literature was rather bleak and depressing. The books I have read before written by Hungarian authors were all dark and wallowing in melancholia. So this is a refreshing change. The Pendragon Legend is actually a satire and a Gothic novel: And yes, this is gripping. I finished it in just a few days. Somehow this character is almost autobiographical, and there are plenty of parallels between the author's interests and the main character's. He gets invited by a certain Earl, to his castle in Wales. And this is where strange things start happening.

First, there was the telephone call that warns him not to go. Then there are the strange noises and weird occurrences. There are just so many elements of the occult that pepper this book, that for all intents and purposes it could be classified as Satanic by the conservative, but at the same time, there are also funny moments that break up the tension.
I am not a big fan of the occult nor of European mysticism, but I must say that this book was well-researched.
The Pendragon Adventure
Real characters are referenced in multiple parts, and it makes me wonder why people back then were so obsessed with these mysteries. I suppose people wanted to turn metals into gold, and other people wanted to become immortal. These were the prevailing desires back then, that is, until the Age of Reason illuminated European history. Anyway, this novel might not be the most profound, but nevertheless I recommend it for some light entertainment.
And of course, as a diversion from the darker offerings of other Hungarian writers. I give it 4 out of 5 stars. See my other book reviews here. Szerb I see that many readers have gotten a kick out of it but for me it all comes off as so much drivel, mildly amusing at times but ultimately a waste of time. A scant 2 stars. In the end it's too much Da Vinci Code. Though I'm not convinced by the translator's claims that there is a deeper book underneath it, I'd invest a bit more time t0 see why he thinks so. Lollig is dat hier een Hongaarse schrijver af en toe het Welsh belachelijk maakt. Het gedoe met de Middeleeuwse legenden over de steen der wijzen is bovendien zo afstandelijk opgeschreven dat het ironisch en licht spottend aandoet, wat ook prettig lezen is hoewel dat vast niet bedoeling van Szerb is geweest.

Elected President of the Hungarian Literary Academy in - aged just 32 -, he published his first novel, The Pendragon Legend which draws upon his personal experience of living in Britain the following year. He was made a Professor of Literature at the University of Szeged the same year. He was twice awarded the Baumgarten Prize, in and In he published a History of World Literature which continues to be authoritative today. He also published a volume on novel theory and a book about the history of Hungarian literature.
Given numerous chances to escape antisemitic persecution as late as , he chose to remain in Hungary, where his last novel, a Pirandellian fantasy about a king staging a coup against himself, then having to impersonate himself, Oliver VII, was published in It was passed off as a translation from the English, as no 'Jewish' work could have been printed at the time.
