However, the Soviet Union , and later Russia , constructed a number of manned drifting stations on a generally annual basis since , some of which have passed over or very close to the Pole. Since , the Russians have also annually established a base, Barneo , close to the Pole.

This operates for a few weeks during early spring. Studies in the s predicted that the North Pole may become seasonally ice-free because of Arctic ice shrinkage , with timescales varying from [1] [2] to the late 21st century or later. Around the beginning of the 20th century astronomers noticed a small apparent "variation of latitude," as determined for a fixed point on Earth from the observation of stars. Part of this variation could be attributed to a wandering of the Pole across the Earth's surface, by a range of a few metres. The wandering has several periodic components and an irregular component.

The component with a period of about days is identified with the eight-month wandering predicted by Euler and is now called the Chandler wobble after its discoverer. The exact point of intersection of the Earth's axis and the Earth's surface, at any given moment, is called the "instantaneous pole", but because of the "wobble" this cannot be used as a definition of a fixed North Pole or South Pole when metre-scale precision is required.

It is desirable to tie the system of Earth coordinates latitude, longitude, and elevations or orography to fixed landforms. Of course, given plate tectonics and isostasy , there is no system in which all geographic features are fixed. As early as the 16th century, many prominent people correctly believed that the North Pole was in a sea, which in the 19th century was called the Polynya or Open Polar Sea. Several expeditions set out to find the way, generally with whaling ships, already commonly used in the cold northern latitudes.

An — expedition commanded by US naval officer George W. Over half the crew, including DeLong, were lost. In the remains of this expedition were found by the Norwegian Bratvaag Expedition. Cagni barely managed to return to the camp, remaining there until 23 June. The US explorer Frederick Cook claimed to have reached the North Pole on 21 April with two Inuit men, Ahwelah and Etukishook, but he was unable to produce convincing proof and his claim is not widely accepted.

However, Peary's claim remains highly disputed and controversial. Those who accompanied Peary on the final stage of the journey were not trained in [Western] navigation, and thus could not independently confirm his navigational work, which some claim to have been particularly sloppy as he approached the Pole. The distances and speeds that Peary claimed to have achieved once the last support party turned back seem incredible to many people, almost three times that which he had accomplished up to that point.

The British explorer Wally Herbert , initially a supporter of Peary, researched Peary's records in and found that there were significant discrepancies in the explorer's navigational records. He concluded that Peary had not reached the Pole. However, Avery's fastest 5-day march was 90 nautical miles, significantly short of the claimed by Peary.

Avery writes on his web site that "The admiration and respect which I hold for Robert Peary, Matthew Henson and the four Inuit men who ventured North in , has grown enormously since we set out from Cape Columbia. Having now seen for myself how he travelled across the pack ice, I am more convinced than ever that Peary did indeed discover the North Pole. Another rejection of Peary's claim arrived in , when E. Myles Standish of the California Institute of Technology , an experienced referee of scientific claims, reported numerous alleged lacunae and inconsistencies.

Byrd and pilot Floyd Bennett in a Fokker tri-motor aircraft. According to Standish, "Anyone who is acquainted with the facts and has any amount of logical reasoning can not avoid the conclusion that neither Cook, nor Peary, nor Byrd reached the North Pole; and they all knew it. The first consistent, verified, and scientifically convincing attainment of the Pole was on 12 May , by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and his US sponsor Lincoln Ellsworth from the airship Norge.

Nobile, with several scientists and crew from the Norge , overflew the Pole a second time on 24 May , in the airship Italia. The Italia crashed on its return from the Pole, with the loss of half the crew. It carried an man crew, with Kenneth C. Maclure of the Royal Canadian Air Force in charge of all scientific observations. Discounting Peary's disputed claim, the first men to set foot at the North Pole were a Soviet party [20] including geophysicists Mikhail Ostrekin and Pavel Senko, oceanographers Mikhail Somov and Pavel Gordienko, [21] and other scientists and flight crew 24 people in total [22] of Aleksandr Kuznetsov 's Sever-2 expedition March—May On 26 April the expedition flew back to the continent.

Next year, on 9 May [26] two other Soviet scientists Vitali Volovich and Andrei Medvedev [27] became the first people to parachute onto the North Pole. On 3 May U.

Some Western sources considered this to be the first landing at the Pole [30] until the Soviet landings became widely known. The United States Air Force independently confirmed their position.

Will the North Pole continue to melt over the years to come?

On 17 August the Soviet nuclear-powered icebreaker Arktika completed the first surface vessel journey to the North Pole. In Ranulph Fiennes and Charles R. Burton became the first people to cross the Arctic Ocean in a single season. They travelled on foot and snowmobile. From the Pole, they travelled towards Svalbard but, due to the unstable nature of the ice, ended their crossing at the ice edge after drifting south on an ice floe for 99 days. They were eventually able to walk to their expedition ship MV Benjamin Bowring and boarded it on 4 August at position As a result of this journey, which formed a section of the three-year Transglobe Expedition —, Fiennes and Burton became the first people to complete a circumnavigation of the world via both North and South Poles, by surface travel alone.

This achievement remains unchallenged to this day. In Sir Edmund Hillary the first man to stand on the summit of Mount Everest and Neil Armstrong the first man to stand on the moon landed at the North Pole in a small twin-engined ski plane. In Will Steger , with seven teammates, became the first to be confirmed as reaching the Pole by dogsled and without resupply. On 12 November Gurnard and Pintado became the third pair of submarines to surface together at the North Pole. In March , Gurnard deployed to the Arctic region during exercise Ice Ex '90 and completed only the fourth winter submerged transit of the Bering and Seas.

In a man strong team 9 Soviets, 4 Canadians skied across the arctic from Siberia to northern Canada. On 7 September the German research vessel Polarstern and the Swedish icebreaker Oden reached the North Pole as the first conventional powered vessels. Polarstern again reached the pole exactly 10 years later [42] with the Healy. Commercial airliner flights on the Polar routes may pass within viewing distance of the North Pole. In recent years journeys to the North Pole by air landing by helicopter or on a runway prepared on the ice or by icebreaker have become relatively routine, and are even available to small groups of tourists through adventure holiday companies.

Parachute jumps have frequently been made onto the North Pole in recent years. The temporary seasonal Russian camp of Barneo has been established by air a short distance from the Pole annually since , and caters for scientific researchers as well as tourist parties.

Trips from the camp to the Pole itself may be arranged overland or by helicopter. Seth says M, this is a serious question, but none of what you quote above sheds any light on the question. Note that there are several things that it addresses: What are the features that are shown around the North Pole Has the ice been gone a long time and i didnt realize it till now?

Of all of those questions the second seems to me to explain the lack of what looks like ice showing up in Google Earth Seth says ed I see no evidence that the images of the oceans were computer generated. Below is a sample of the North Pole and the North Atlantic. The features you see in the Atlantic look more like the sea bed than the surface. I may get a chance to ask Google about this on one of their forums, so stay tuned. Seth says I started a thread on Google Earth Help forum here. Seth says Unfortunately the geomotry at the pole is such that it appears to be impossible to place an overlay map up there.

The closer you get to the pole the smaller the map is forced to be. The geometry makes the pole like a black hole in which ever overlay map will dissapear. You can play with it yourself if you think you can do better Seth says seth Here is the answer i got to my question Hello Seth, The reason is because Google only has aerial images over the land masses. The ice cap is still there, honest ;-: Why don't they get some aerial images of the north pole? I indend to see if i can make an overlay of this. Actually this won't work JD Schmidt says I know that there are sattilites that pass over the north and south pole.

However there is no public view of these sattilites. Strictly for their eyes only. This could explain the missing polar ice caps. Also it might allow you to see the hole to the inner earth. Which they don't want you to know about. In fact there is an expedition under way to explore the inner earth theory. You can go to YouTube to learn more about this.

I hope this may help to explain the missing polar caps. JD Schmidt says if I can be of assistance. Just drop me a line.

Arctic sea ice decline

Seth says JD Schmidt Seth says Lots of info re the north pole in this google earth kmz Seth says This artcle shows the of imagery that i was hoping that Google would start to show. Seth says It's frustrating somtimes to get a big company like Google to do the right thing. This is a case in point. The Earth needs a year by year awareness of the melting Arctic ice cap. Yet Google refuses to show it to us. The excuse goes something like "we only show images of land masses and the artic is not a land mass". The fix is easy The first thing we would notice is a rapid, and out of control melting see above , this would be because as more ice melts, more heat is absorbed, which melts more ice, which allows more heat to be absorbed, which melts more.

Seth says More technical information here. Seth says Photooverlay might be the solution, but i can't get it to work yet. Check out the original post here , might be more references. The picture here shows the North West Passage quite open. Seth says Here is a pretty dramatic video of the melting. The only remaining copy is in the Bird family trust and there under orders not to tell about its contents or show it to any one. If there was nothing to the story why did the government try so hard to hush it up?

Star Treck inspired the flip phone, Jules Vern inspired space exploration, Admiral Bird inspired, the military to shut him up. They have also done underground Atomic bomb tests, WHY? Hummmm questions, questions, questions, Ever notice how much air brushing is going on? Why not just stick your head in the sand , that at least is free Any one here think Craig has the only valid claim to sanity?

The stuff our government is verifyably doing is enough to make you crazy or shock you awake like a cold shower. Seriously did you research MKUltra before calling me out? Or your a government Stoog here to monitor and ridicule any legitimit concerns. Any one here want to try to respond with answers to any of these questions? I want to know.
