Wikisource — Wikisource is an online digital library of free content textual sources on a wiki, operated by the Wikimedia Foundation.

Wikisource is the name of the project as a whole and the name for each instance of that project, the projects aims are to host all forms of free text, in many languages, and translations. Originally conceived as an archive to store useful or important historical texts, the project officially began in November 24, under the name Project Sourceberg. The name Wikisource was adopted later that year and it received its own domain name seven months later, the project has come under criticism for lack of reliability but it is also cited by organisations such as the National Archives and Records Administration.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The project holds works that are either in the domain or freely licensed, professionally published works or historical source documents, not vanity products. Verification was initially made offline, or by trusting the reliability of digital libraries. Now works are supported by online scans via the ProofreadPage extension, some individual Wikisources, each representing a specific language, now only allow works backed up with scans. While the bulk of its collection are texts, Wikisource as a whole hosts other media, some Wikisources allow user-generated annotations, subject to the specific policies of the Wikisource in question.

Wikisources early history included several changes of name and location, the original concept for Wikisource was as storage for useful or important historical texts. These texts were intended to support Wikipedia articles, by providing evidence and original source texts. The collection was focused on important historical and cultural material. The project was originally called Project Sourceberg during its planning stages, in , there was a dispute on Wikipedia regarding the addition of primary source material, leading to edit wars over their inclusion or deletion.

Project Sourceberg was suggested as a solution to this, perhaps Project Sourceberg can mainly work as an interface for easily linking from Wikipedia to a Project Gutenberg file, and as an interface for people to easily submit new work to PG. Wed want to complement Project Gutenberg--how, exactly, and Jimmy Wales adding like Larry, Im interested that we think it over to see what we can add to Project Gutenberg.

It seems unlikely that primary sources should in general be editable by anyone -- I mean, Shakespeare is Shakespeare, unlike our commentary on his work, the project began its activity at ps.

Le Médecin volant | Revolvy

The contributors understood the PS subdomain to mean either primary sources or Project Sourceberg, however, this resulted in Project Sourceberg occupying the subdomain of the Pashto Wikipedia. A vote on the name changed it to Wikisource on December 6, Despite the change in name, the project did not move to its permanent URL until July 23,, since Wikisource was initially called Project Sourceberg, its first logo was a picture of an iceberg.

It was loosely based on the Latin comedy Aulularia by Plautus, from many incidents and scraps of dialogue are borrowed. The miser of the title is called Harpagon, an adapted from the Latin harpago. Although he is over sixty, he is attempting to arrange a marriage between himself and a young woman, Mariane.

Satire and farce blend in the plot, as when the misers hoard is stolen. The play also makes fun of certain theatrical conventions, such as the spoken aside addressed to the audience, the characters of LAvare, however, generally demand to know who exactly is being spoken to. There is mutual resentment between the two not only money but over love when Harpagon tricks his son into revealing his love for Mariane. The play is known as The Hypochondriac, an alternative translation of the French title.

Thomas Diafoirus, his son, betrothed to Angelique by her father, the play opens with Argan, a severe hypochondriac, going through the bill from his apothecary item by item. He pays out only half of what is on the bill. That done, he calls for his maid, Toinette, when she fails to appear immediately he shouts and calls her name until she arrives. Toinette is not interested in putting up with Argans temper, so she mocks his rage, eventually he gives up trying to scold her and asks her to call in his daughter, Angelique.

Angelique is ready to talk to him, but Argan must leave the room for a short while, while he is out, Angelique takes the opportunity to talk to Toinette.

The Flying Doctor and Barbouillé’s Jealousy (Le Médecin Volant et la Jalousie de Barbouillé)

Argan returns and expects to surprise his daughter when he tells her someone has asked to marry her. He is shocked to find that she not only knows about it, Toinette asks him why, with all his money, Argan would want a doctor for a son-in-law. He replies that since he is ill, he thought it would be a good idea to have a doctor in the family. Toinette will not take his hypochondria seriously and tells him that she knows Angelique will never agree to that marriage, more than that, Toinette downright forbids the union to happen. Farce — In theatre, a farce is a comedy that aims at entertaining the audience through situations that are highly exaggerated, extravagant, and thus improbable.

Farce is also characterized by humor, the use of deliberate absurdity or nonsense. Farces have been written for the stage and film, furthermore, a farce is also often set in one particular location, where all events occur. These plays are performed as comic relief during the long, serious Noh plays, following stage shows of Umer Shareef are extremely popular. Henry Fielding — Henry Fielding was an English novelist and dramatist best known for his rich, earthy humour and satirical prowess, and as the author of the novel Tom Jones.

His younger sister, Sarah, also became a successful writer, Fielding was born at Sharpham, Somerset, and educated at Eton College, where he established a lifelong friendship with William Pitt the Elder. After a romantic episode with a woman that ended in his getting into trouble with the law, he went to London. In , he travelled to Leiden to study classics and law at the university, however, lack of money obliged him to return to London and he began writing for the theatre.

The Theatrical Licensing Act of is alleged to be a response to his activities. The particular play that triggered the Licensing Act was the unproduced, anonymously authored, The Golden Rump, once the act was passed, political satire on the stage became virtually impossible, and playwrights whose works were staged were viewed as suspect. Fielding therefore retired from the theatre and resumed his career in law in order to support his wife Charlotte Craddock, Allen went on to provide for the education and support of Fieldings children after the writers death.

Fielding never stopped writing political satire and satires of current arts, the Tragedy of Tragedies was, for example, quite successful as a printed play. He also contributed a number of works to journals of the day and he wrote for Tory periodicals, usually under the name Captain Hercules Vinegar. Fielding continued to air his liberal and anti-Jacobite views in articles and newspapers in the late s.

Almost by accident he took to writing novels in , angered by Samuel Richardsons success with Pamela and his first big success was an anonymous parody of that, Shamela. This satire follows the model of the famous Tory satirists of the generation, Jonathan Swift and John Gay. Fielding followed this with Joseph Andrews, an original work supposedly dealing with Pamelas brother, although begun as a parody, it developed into an accomplished novel in its own right and is considered to mark Fieldings debut as a serious novelist.

It is a satire of Walpole that draws a parallel between him and Jonathan Wild, the gang leader and highwayman. His greatest work was Tom Jones, a meticulously constructed picaresque novel telling the convoluted, Fielding married his first wife, Charlotte Craddock, in at the Church of St Mary in Charlcombe, Somerset. Charlotte, on whom he modelled the heroines of both Tom Jones and Amelia, died in The play was published in a censored version for the first time in It was part of an edition, edited by La Grange and Vivot. The parts of Dom Juan that offended the censors were pasted over with strips of paper glued into almost all of the copies and this version was in prose, instead of the also censored version by Thomas Corneille which Corneille had versified.

Nearly a century and a later, in , a full. However, the characters from the two differ in several aspects. However, his death comes sooner than expected and he finds that his attempts to repent, in both plays the main character is condemned to Hell. The story of this follows the last two days in the life of a young courtier, Dom Juan Tenorio, a libertine, a seducer of women. He is accompanied throughout the play by his valet, Sganarelle, the unrepentant Don Juan will not escape the vengeance of Heaven, and he is ultimately punished.

The various settings are all in Sicily, in the garden of the palace, after a few words of appreciation for snuff tobacco, Sganarelle speaks with Gusman, who is the squire to Donna Elvire. Her primary concern is the departure of her new husband. Sganarelle, not without pride, paints for Gusman a terrible portrait of Don Juan as a fickle, cynical, disbeliever, Donna Elvire then enters to challenge him to explain the reasons for his departure. Ettore Petrolini — Ettore Petrolini was an Italian stage and film actor, playwright, screenwriter and novelist.

He is considered one of the most important figures of avanspettacolo, vaudeville and he was noted for his numerous caricature sketches, and was the inventor of a revolutionary and anticonformist way of performing.

Petrolini is also remembered for having created the Dadaist character Fortunello and his contribution to the history of Italian theater is now widely acknowledged, especially with regard to his influence on 20th century comedy. His iconic character Gastone became a byword in Italian for a type of stagey snob. Born in Rome, the son of a blacksmith of Ronciglione and grandson of a carpenter, Petrolini attended theaters in Rome as a boy and his first performances were on the sideshows on the Piazza Guglielmo Pepe.

At the age of 13, Petrolini attended reform school as he recalls in his memoirs. When 15, he decided to home to pursue a career in the theater. In the same year, when only 19, he met Ines Colapietro, Ines, who was at the time only 15 years old, was hired as a singer by the Gambrinus theater in Rome, along with her sister Tina. They performed in theaters and cafes in Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil, enjoying great success everywhere, while Petrolini was in Rio de Janeiro, appendicitis forced him to leave the stage for a month.

After Rio, Petrolini remained a few months longer in South America and he returned for other tours in and , also appearing in Mexico and Cuba. It was a success and, after two seasons at the Teatro Jovinelli, the Sala Umberto company signed an exclusive three-year contract with him.

The performance aroused the enthusiasm of Futurists such as Filippo Tommaso Marinetti who called Fortunello the most difficult to analyze of all Petrolinis masterpieces. Petrolini was so flattered by the admiration of the Futurists that he participated in some of their public events performing texts of Marinetti, Bruno Corra, the collaboration culminated in Radioscopia di un duetto, a one-act play co-written with the Futurist writer and painter Francesco Cangiullo in The following year, Mario Bonnard directed a film based on the play, Mentre il pubblico ride, starring Petrolini, Petrolini developed an anti-Dannunzian position, something which was appreciated by the Futurists, and thus he put on exhibit during his variety sketches.

In , he took his stage adaptation of Luigi Pirandellos Lumie di Sicilia, in the s, he also met Elma Criner, who became his companion and later his wife. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
