These authors don't care. The message is more important. So why even make a parody at all? Your mileage may vary. Let me drive the bus! I believe the purpose of government is to do things for the Public Good. There are plenty of people and businesses that cater to the very private good, but few who care about the Public Good. Take the vulture in this picture book.
He is dressed up in a parody of Uncle Sam so he looks patriotic. He hates the Public Good. He hates the government. However, he wants to drive the bus anyways. He is standing in for the Pigeon in Mo Mullins' books and represents Republican candidate Let me drive the bus!
He is standing in for the Pigeon in Mo Mullins' books and represents Republican candidates. He stands for the last 50 years of Republican leaders. Most of the Republican platforms are quoted by the vulture. When he is done with the bus, it is a wreck. This book was originally published before the election yet it is amazingly prescient.

The voters never learn. Aug 19, Valleri rated it liked it Shelves: At least in the Mo Willems series, the pigeon doesn't actually get to drive the bus. Which is a plus: May 30, Miss Ryoko rated it it was amazing Shelves: This book was written in and scary how accurate it is today.
Hilariously true though quite sad and drives home the point pun intended. If you're a fan of Mo Willems, parodies, and people making fun of politics, read this. Sep 17, Diane rated it it was ok Shelves: Last time I checked, one must be 18 years-old to vote. Second, the book is not that funny. It is "cute" in places and heavy-handed in others.
The Republican at my house chuckled, and the older children who have grown up on Mo Willems reacognized the book structure and could look beyond it to the content. It does not simply attack Republicans but also features The Democrat as a boneless chicken. Sep 20, James rated it it was ok Shelves: I received a copy of this book through the Goodreads First Reads program. Mo Willem's book is better, let there be no doubt. This one isn't a kids book. Well, I suppose it could be, but it probably shouldn't be.
This is for adults. I can't really imagine it would change anyone's voting preferences, but I suppose it's possible. It's pretty heavy-handed, though, in depicting the evils of the GOP. I'm not saying that it's wrong, but the author clearly has an agenda and chooses to interpret the beliefs of the Republican Party in the worst possible way.
And that takes away some of the comedic value to the book, because it obviously is not just a parody, but has a more cynical point to make. I also wasn't a fan of telling people to go look something up. The author talks about the Southern Strategy, but then doesn't bother to explain it, instead telling the reader to look it up. Just another time where the book loses its light-heartedness and comedic value, and really takes the reader out of the story by insisting they go look something up elsewhere.
I gave it a light chuckle and a shake of my head. I figure that earns it about two stars.
Don't Let the Republican Drive the Bus!
Dec 13, Trinika Abraham rated it it was amazing. As for the parody, The Republican vulture who replaces our beloved pigeon is dying to take the wheel and the fit he throws trying to get his way is hilariously disturbing mainly because it accurately reflects the climate of our political system. The Republican takes aim at everything presumed wrong with America like socialism, equality, taxes, unions and so much more.
Oh by the way, there is a special guest appearance by The Democrat chicken. Jan 03, Elliot Chalom rated it it was ok.

I think there is much to be critical of with respect to both major political parties today. Nevertheless, I picked up this book expecting a clever take on what is wrong with the Republican Party. This book just wasn't that funny. The tone was inconsistent and it was extremely over the top in its republican hate. Pick it up in a bo Disclaimer: Pick it up in a bookstore, flip through, and if you're very familiar with "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus" you'll laugh a few times. And don't bother showing it to your kids. There's nothing to learn here, even if you agree with the politics.
Sep 06, Book Lover rated it it was ok. While I did get a couple laughs out of this book, especially since I love the actual "Pigeon" books, and I do agree with some of the issues brought up here, overall the tone was a bit too hateful for me to enjoy it. Well, most of them anyway, but that's a fault of the human race, not a political party.
Any potential for humorou I received a copy of this book through the Goodreads First Reads program. Any potential for humorously and cleverly discussing the issues at hand was lost to libel. Such a shame; it's a cute idea. Aug 24, Samantha rated it liked it Shelves: I didn't find this one to be as much fun to read as Goodnight, Bush. Perhaps the abundance of words, compared with the brevity of the prioi, was what slowed my enjoyment?

That said, I did find it to be a fun satire, and a fun read. Oct 23, Reptaaa rated it it was amazing Shelves: I don't normally like children's books they are very thin and there are a lot of them! Just to clarify, this particular book is not for children.
Rather, it is a parody for adults. Sep 06, Patrice Hoffman rated it liked it Shelves: Other reviews I've read says it's pretty offensive but I disagree. The key is not to take it too seriously. FYI it is not a children's book. Although there are interesting illustrations, I don't advise anyone to read this book to their child before bedtime. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. I may be biased because of my political views but then again, who isn't?
Oct 23, Meg MacPherson rated it it was amazing Shelves: This came into the library where I work and my colleagues and I picked it up the second we saw it. This is NOT a children's book, it is only disguised as such. It is a parody of the voting process for adults, using children's illustrations. It is hilarious and poignant at the same time. I recommend it to everyone who has ever voted or not or ever will vote or not. May 10, Shacoria rated it did not like it. This book was horribly offensive to me and I'm not even a Republican.
It is labeled as a satire but the jabs are not cleverly disguised at all. It's really just an attack on the Republican party, which is fine by me political parties attack each other every day. The thing I had a problem with was the fact that the title and cover makes you think you're about to read something clever and all you get is something childish and stupid.
Oct 22, Sherry Ward rated it it was amazing. This book was a great parody and I loved it. I won this book on Goodreads giveaway. I have already loaned it to two people who read it and thoroughly enjoyed it. It could not have come at a better time with the upcoming election. While it was a parody it certainly has nailed the policies and ideas of the far right. A great read and I would highly recommend it. Dec 14, Jessica rated it it was amazing Shelves: Hilarious parody and an even funnier parody. But the sad part is that "Don't Let the Republican Drive the Bus" is a pretty accurate account of the way Republicans are acting.
I, for one, plan on voting Everybody else needs to do "their" part, if they care at all for America and its people. Dec 15, Diane rated it it was ok. Definitely not a children's book even though it is disguised as such. I much prefer "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus" by Mo Willems even though obviously this dwells on an entirely different subject matter. Setting aside the fact that I don't politically agree with much of the information in this book, it was a bit too snide and hateful for my taste.
Sep 21, Jeanne rated it liked it. I'm happy to have won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. I'm the perfect demographic for this book - I love children's picture books and I watch the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. A great parody with an important message. Nov 19, Jessica Bingham rated it really liked it Shelves: This book was accidentally shelved in the children's room at my library.
Thank goodness I grabbed it before a child did. This is not to be confused with Mo Willems by any means. The illustrations are similar, that is about it. So I read it. Write a customer review. Of course only democrats will appreciate it. I'm a huge fan of the real pigeon books. The drawings here are so authentic. I love this book. I bought it for my son but since he's a toddler, I probably just bought it for myself. This book is hysterical!
It's just over the head of the kids, so they don't know why we are entertained when reading it to them. Certainly recommend to anyone who isn't a fan of the political crap in today's world. Already agreed with the basic points made by this cute book, but it was inexpensive enough to enjoy once.
Gave it to a relative to enjoy, and haven't seen it since. Great for kids to be honest! This is a clever and very funny book that attacks the current Republican view of the world. It is the perfect gift for any Democrat you love or any Republican you don't. Buy a copy for dramatic reading at your extended family holiday dinner. It will be a great conversation starter. You could tell this book was going to be one-sided by the title but its concept was still funny.
