Please try again later. I am a huge fan of Secretariat and bought this little book as much to add to my shelf as anything. It is a quick read whose strength is in clearly describing the races in clear, casual prose. The author admits his prejudice in favor of Big Red and anyone who touches him, and as I too love the horse, I am sympathetic.

The You Tube videos of Secretariat's races plus the picture book "Secretariat" by Raymond Wollfe together with the books demonstrate the power, athleticism, astonishing beauty and the race intelligence of this horse that this little book is not up to conveying. I sometimes think that Secretariat would have won his races without a jockey, which is unfair and unkind to Ron Turcotte, but the animal wanted to win and had the package to do it--by 31 lengths at the legendary Belmont.

If you are a fan, pick up the book. If you are colelcting the Triple Crown winnders, pick up the book. If you want to get to know Secretariat try the other sources first. I finished this book in one night.. So my complaint is it is too short. Could the story just keep going? Aren't there more details we could add? It is a great read especially if you love Secretariat and want to know about his ancestry.

I wish it was and we could do it all over again, except do not syndicate him and let Secretariat break every record on every track. I know he would have done it.

Thanks for the great book.. One person found this helpful. I have this book too as part of the Legend series Great book, great horse!! Capps is a terrific writer of thoroughbred bios. He shows a true passion for Secretariat which is evident is his other books as well. He never fails to mention the "Meadow Monster" in all he writes. You gotta love Secretariat! With all that has been written about this great horse, I still learned a few things in this book that I hadn't read anywhere else. Also recommend Spectacular Bid and Affirmed and Alydar!

Forty years ago, when we watched Secretariat hit the wire 31 lengths ahead of Twice a Prince, crushing the Belmont stakes record by two seconds and change, many of us knew that we would not see his like again. According to his jockey, Ron Turcotte, Secretariat was retired before he had reached his full potential at the longer distances. We would have loved to watch that big red horse run all day and smash every record there was, but it was not to be.
