Is Writing Spiritual? — Howlarium | A Curated Forum for Fiction Writers, Essayists & Poets

But mostly I write for me because I know me better than anyone else. Again, these thoughts and frustrations are under lock and key in notebooks and journals. For me, and God.

The Art of Spiritual Writing

More of a mystery between man and God. The closer I can get to being the true and honest self the better chance I have of becoming whole. I will never be whole this side of heaven, but the closer I can get to the true self, and not the imposter, faker, and trying to please others self, the better. Writing helps me do this.

Writing a book is teaching my conclusions on the idea more accurately, teaching my starting points on an idea. But the process of writing untangles the thoughts and ideas swirling in my brain. I write fiction because without fail a theme arises from the prose. I let the characters say and do what they need to do.

I want the voice to be my voice in time and space. Not what I think good writing sounds like or mimicking someone else. I have to trust the subconscious and creative and spiritual side of me to write the story. My second book was dealing with family dysfunction growing up. Third, was about racial injustice. None of these novels started with the idea: It came because that was in my heart.

But writing as a spiritual habit helped untangle the pain inside these real circumstances and situations. Beyond Words August 28, Language: Related Video Shorts 0 Upload your video. The most helpful passages explain how to decide on genre, how to target your audience, how to submit your book, and what is considered acceptable in terms of industry etiquette. The book is beautifully written and edited, and I love the cover. The reason I gave it 3 stars is because most of the listings in the back are out-of-date. Also, because of the fast-changing profile of publishing, some of the advice no longer holds.

It could be a 5-star if they updated every year or two. Herman and Black walk you through the entire process - the title "from inspiration to publication" - is an accurate depiction of what you will find.

Writing as a Spiritual Practice

Although the book is now over ten years old, much of it is still applicable. It would be great if the authors would consider a revised edition to reflect the changes in the publishing companies' world, self-publication pro's and con's , finding publishers online, etc. That being said, it is still worth every penny you spend on this book! Is Writing a Spiritual?

I found it very helpful not only for what 'to do' but indirectly the 'not to do'. The book has info on how to pitch, and 'who' to pitch.. Black are too nice - if there is such a thing. All in all - a great navigational aid for any aspiring writer of material that can be categorized as 'spiritual' - a very wide genre, always with good intentions and always needing guidance in the 'real world' of getting a book sold. I read all books in the writing spiritual category I could find; this one and Hal Zina Bennett's are the best available.

If you are a spiritual writer, or aspiring to --be buy them both! After seeing all the 5 star ratings for this book, I not only ordered it immediately, I paid more for it to be shipped than what it cost. For the purposes I was looking for, it was a disappointment. I am in the process of writing a book proposal and I got the impression from the reviews that there would be samples for me to look at, and there was very little.

I needed to have examples.

The book proposal section was skimpy and too general. It added nothing to what I already knew. It would have helped if I could have seen on the page more samples of what an overview looks like, or an outline. The first half of the book was good in that it talked about the spiritual aspects of being a writer. But the proposal part, which was what caused me to buy the book, was not what I was looking for.
