Traveling from Phuket to Bangkok and throughout Thailand's exotic locales, Marek's desire to experience all the forbidden fruits Thailand has to offer leads him to Piam, a gorgeous, kind, independent Thai girl who, he is convinced, might well be the one.

But as he immerses himself deeper into this strange country, replete with often inexplicable thought-patterns, worldviews and customs, Marek begins to discover a much darker, more complex side to the Land of Smiles and its inhabitants. Soon, Piam begins to reveal her true colours. It soon dawns on him that, despite his best intentions most of the time , he has been ensnared -- as have many men before him -- by the dreaded Honey Trap. The stormy relationship that ensues provides a fascinating backdrop to the insights into Thailand's unique culture that stem from Marek's efforts to come to terms with the reality of the country and the people who call it home.

Life in the tropics by Marek Lenarcik
This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Nov 21, Marc Laderman rated it liked it Shelves: It's interesting that Marek writes dialog in the James Joyce style; with a dash instead of using quote marks.
The pit fall some farangs endure in thailand. Couldn't put it down till I finished it.

Most helpful customer reviews on Amazon. Entertaining story about a man quitting his office job in Europe to leave in the Land of Smiles, Thailand. I thought it writing was crisp, smooth, and with minimal typos. He actually inspired me to plan a trip to Thailand later in the year at first he even inspired me to quite my office job and move Thailand to teach English, but that lasted about a day. They say that someone someone visits Thailand for a year and writes a book. Someone who lives there for 5 years tries to put their thoughts in a blog.
Those who have been there for 20 years are more confused than ever. This book fits the first category. It needs a good edit.
About Life in the tropics
Marek wants you to believe that this is his life story till he leaves Thailand and end up in Myanmar via Columbia. May be so but you have to overlook some minor points in the narrative we will cover below. Working for a major software company Microsoft? Then he gets bored, his standing in the company suffers and he makes his final move to quit and move to Thailand. The story immediately takes on a new life and become real page turner. He picks teaching English as his new profession.
He describes very well what a charade is the teaching profession in Thailand. Unruly and indifferent students, poor pay, and pressure to pass nearly all students regardless. So far well told.
Meet Marek
But then things get iffy. Also he start taking expensive trips including one to Pattaya at a luxury hotel with his girl. Money wise the story do not add up. Otherwise the narrative describing life in Thailand including life with a Thai woman is very interesting and makes you want more. Let us hope his next book he promises one on Myanmar will be as interesting and hopefully free of what marred a very good book on Thailand. I liked this book a lot, because it was honest, well written and interesting.
The author won't be Employee of the Month or Best Boyfriend Ever, but that makes the story even more real to the reader. Here we see a realistic picture of Thailand and the main characters. Nothing is held back or sugarcoated.
