Executives at government-owned enterprises such as the Royal Mail and Network Rail are paid every bit as generously as those in some FTSE boardrooms. Local authority chieftains now earn salaries that more than compare with bosses in industry. Yet, though the goal posts have moved decisively, in Britain's febrile political universe the uniquely protected nature of public sector pensions remains an issue which dare not speak its name - as Alan Johnson's abortive attempt in showed. Typically for New Labour, it spotted an important issue, looked as though it was going to address it - and then dropped the ball.
No one seems to want to pick it up again, though the problem has considerably worsened since then. If any politician from the mainstream parties is currently considering the sort of radical reform that is necessary to get the system back on track, they are keeping their intentions well-disguised. The Conservative leader David Cameron briefly referred to the issue two years ago. But his call for the 'very generous' public sector finalsalary schemes to be closed to new entrants was deemed so politically inflammatory that it was quickly expunged from the record.
Clearly, though, something needs to give.

Nobody wants to see public sector pensions reduced. There are many tales of hardship at the lower end of the pay scales, and, of course, most public workers make a terrific contribution to society as a whole.

But, because of what has happened to the private sector, everything is now out of kilter. Sustaining a system in which, almost uniquely, nearly all of the country's public sector workers can look forward to an index-linked pension based on the salary that they are earning at the point when they retire has become the economics of the madhouse. Such gold-plated pensions have survived not because they have been better managed than private-sector pensions, but only because they are subsidised by taxpayers.

That bill continues to rise inexorably. Overall, the pension picture in Britain after 13 years of a Labour Government is diabolical. As for the other half who have tried to save for a comfortable old age, those in the private sector have seen their pensions plundered, while those in the public sector, though feather-bedded for the moment, have a system that is ruinously expensive, unsustainable and can no longer be defended. Last year, the OECD placed Britain at the bottom of an international pension league table for those yet to retire.
