Tightest bunch of cops ever. The Transit Poluce Department was the only City department to deploy its officers on solo patrol in the most dangerous areas of the city. As such, Transit Cops developed certain survivsl skills. My first year during a very roudy college reunion, I was assigned to ATV patrol in the worst area of the reunion. The officer doing the assignments said he was teaming me up with another officer for my safety. The sergeant who hired me, was a retired NYPD detective. As soon as he learned I was teamed up, he told the officer doing the assignments to: I think he can handle a college reunion.

I will never forget when I was a rookie cop assigned to TPF, and you had a with 15 punks on the wall giving them all summons for open containers and other offenses. That was best ever! LOL, it was on the F line. I want to introduce myself. My name is Chris Messina. I am the brother of Christine Hurley. I truly love and admire my sister for what she has been through and what she stands for even today.
My niece and nephew have a wonderful mom and I hope they truly understand the bravery, courage and sacrifice their mom has displayed over the years.

Let me close by saying my younger sister is the most dedicated and devoted friend to the Transit Police Department I have ever known. I love and respect her dearly and deeply! Chris, You and your family have every reason to be proud of Christine. I know, by her ordeal, she saved an unknown civilian from certain death had they come across this madman on later day. God bless your sister and your family.
Be well, Lee Winters. A real nice tribute to a brave officer. I was a Transit Police Officer from to , it was an honor and privilege to have worked with such a dedicated group. A great article about some great cops. I was proud to have been a NYC Transit cop because of the caliber of the people I had the privilege to work with. Just another story in the naked subway. Ed Barry Thanks Lee for a wonderful telling of a story of great courage and determination.
I was a lieutenant at the time and responded to the scene. The perpetrator was a raving lunatic and was subdued and restrained without any further injury to the subject or the officers on the scene. A great job by all involved. Great story and great memories. Those 2yrs made me a better cop. Great piece of writing and history to what is and still is a honorable and extremely dangerous job.

McTntyre was a lucky gal. He repeatedly found himself going before the commissioner, the mayor and even a governor as he fought for parity for the transit police with the New York city police.
He achieved it too. John Martin played a vital role in this battle, oft times thinking outside the box to accomplish the goal. Though he was highly favoured among his own men, he often found himself squared up against those in the police commission, including the chief, as he rallied for the rights of those men he worked with. As you read this book you can feel of his love for his fellow man. Despite the differences in ideals, he didn't berate nor diminish those in authority within the commission in his book.
He recognized their authority but knew also that he had to fight for the rights of those whom he worked with and for the citizens of the city of New York, for their right to safe passage on the subways and transits of the city. I enjoyed this book as an eye opener into the workings of the TA. It was at times tedious and occasionally repetitive. Overall, it pays great tribute to an incredible leader of a man.
The concluding chapter is written by his son, Brian R. It is an amazing book!!!!! It is written by my grandfather who passed away nearly 13 years ago and was recently published by my father, who wrote the last chapter himself, as a gift for my family. I wish that every one of my friends and family could have met my grandfather. Through reading this book, you get the chance to meet my grandfather I even learned a lot of things that I didn't know. Martin was truly an incredible man to all who knew him.
Not one day goes by that I don't th It is an amazing book!!!!! Not one day goes by that I don't think about him and miss him. He was an inspiration to his fellow officers and certainly his family and friends. It would mean a lot to me if my friends would give the book a chance My dad was a Transit Police Officer in the 70s and 80s and rarely talks about his experiences on the job.
John Martin explains those differences in his memoir. He helped the TA tremendously during his tenure and those officers, and all who followed, were all blessed to have him in their corner. I've met quite a few Transit cops over the years and all have great pride My dad was a Transit Police Officer in the 70s and 80s and rarely talks about his experiences on the job.
