We had the pleasure of spending time with him several times a year on family fishing trips. And it was absolutely love at first site! And as life often goes, a situation arose that made it impossible for Gunner's owner to keep him. They begged one of our other family members to take him, and for a short time, that was the plan. But that didn't work out either and they were running out of time. If they couldn't find a new home for Gunner soon, they would have to surrender him to the shelter.
Unfortunately, pit bulls don't fare very well in shelters. We all knew that if Gunner ended up in a shelter, it would like seal his fate. We were devastated but didn't think there was anything that we could do. At the time, my husband and I lived in an appartment with our cat named Kitty. The apartment pet policy stated that pit bulls were not allowed She doesn't like them and she is not declawed. She's been known to leave her canine victims bloody and traumatized.
And my husband finally said that while our home may not be perfect, we had to try and save him. So we found a vet who certified that he was an American Bulldog Mix so that our landlord would allow us to bring him in. It wasn't difficult to convince them because the property manager who lived on site also had a pit bull that they described as a Staffordshire Terrier in order for her to be allowed to live there.
And as far as Kitty goes, we decided to make sure that they were never left alone together and just hoped that she would eventually learn to accept him. So it was official. We decided that we would travel to his home about 2 hours away to pick him up on Christmas day Leading up to that day there had been a lot of snow. And when Christmas day came, it was just getting worse and worse and deeper and deeper. It was so bad that many people cancelled their Christmas plans because it was difficult for anyone without a 4-wheel drive truck to get through the snow.
I was worried about driving so far to pick him up in such horrible weather. I suggested to my husband that we should wait a few days until the roads had improved. But he was adament Thankfully we did have a 4-wheel drive truck and my husband felt confident that we could make the trip safely. The conditions were really bad and there was about inches of snow on the ground and the snow removal trucks were having a difficult time keeping up with the falling snow.
It was a very tense drive. I cannot even remember how many people we saw stranded on the road. I would guess that we passed at least a dozen. Normally we would have stopped to help whoever we could, but we were on a mission.
