But he just slipped a peg or two. First let me say that you will find some examples of the finest story telling imaginable in this book; you will be transported by passages that will carry you away on wings of wonder at Conroy's ability to weave magic in his prose. But then story-telling and wondrous prose are a big part of what we have come to expect-- and respect-- in his writing.
I will also concede that no one but Pat Conroy could have written this novel.

Only Conroy has the nerve to try and the talent to succeed at presenting such unlikely, offbeat, troubled, and lovable characters AND to expect us to believe it. Only he as evidenced by earlier works is so hopelessly enamored and verbally enraptured by the brutally hot, consistently grimy, oppressively southern city that is Charleston. And only he could so intimidate his editors that none of them had the courage to a. Conroy has been content in the past to let us assess his work and to assign him the high praise we find his gifts to warrant. But apparently in "South Of Broad" he feared we might not be diligent in that process, so he describes FOR us the literary and journalistic magnificence of the copy he quotes from his primary character's newspaper column.
And he takes us by the hand and guides us to every emotional response we are expected to have as the saga unfolds in his highly imaginative and supremely creative narrative. This is a book of self-congratulatory excesses. How many remarkable soap-opera relationships and unlikely events are too many to fit comfortably in pages?
How GOOD can one selfless year-old former nutcase be? And how EVIL the villains that plague him as he fights to escape unwarranted guilt and near-terminal homeliness? There are characters a giant former football rival turned junkie that wander through this book with no discernible assigned purpose. There are long wordy, saccharine scenes rescuing the dolphin And there are characters that are pivotal to this book who fail by the sheer caricature they portray of themselves.
The mother--always a shaper and a motivator in Conroy's work--is so stark and inhumane as to be unbelievable. And the father very nearly pulls the same stunt in the other direction. Not to mention the priest with a past; as though his glitzy present isn't hard enough to swallow. If you love Pat Conroy's writing, as I do, you should read this book. Some of his best artistic moments are in it.

This author deserves the kudos he receives for his writing. Fate, tragedy, death, love, life, religion, relationships, mental illness, joy, crime, generosity, class struggle, friendship, excellent writing, superb characters, are all part of this book. It is not for the faint hearted. Charleston comes alive, suffers and survives triumphantly. I loved the book! I read "South of Broad" to see how an accomplished novelist turns a place into a character. Pat Conroy did not disappoint in this regard - he makes his city alive to all five senses.
And, the book features a rich ensemble of human characters whose intertwined lives form the spine of a story that unfolds over several decades. The storyteller is Leo King, whose coming of age unfolds as Charleston, South Carolina is beginning to free itself from the shackles of segregation. Leo is blessed with neither the bloodlines of entitlement nor the physical attractiveness or athleticism that might, in Charleston society, help to compensate for his common birth.
