Although I did not find any of the information useful, it is definitely most applicable for someone who wishes to know more about Sociology and what it means. The content is understandable and in bite-sized passages that does not seek to bore or infuriate the reader, unlike what most academic textbooks do.
But again, it would be silly to use this as a textbook, considering that all information in this book are so summarised that it feels almost like a crash course 2 stars for effort and brevity. One person found this helpful. Great book on sociology for a course I am teaching. As are other books in this series, the "Dummies" marketing tool is misleading. I teach Sociology and this book provides important analysis of the basics in the field. The writing style is engaging not like a text.
From here, we can go deeper like reading something by Peter Berger Invitation of Sociology or struggle through a text of some pages. Probably not for the Ivy League undergraduate; at the same time, for the SAT student or someone wanting to understand society and our role in it, a great start. Recommend Psychology for Dummies also. Between the two of these books, you've basically covered the most important theories and principles in both of these related disciplines. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase.
This book covers the subject of sociology in breadth and stirs your appetite for more. You'll learn some interesting concepts and will find additional references for further study. As a novice in sociology and interested to understand the basics, this was a perfect intro to decide continuing on learning. The author did a great job explaining complex thinking in a very clear and easy way.
I love this book. Very informative and easy to read. I'm a soc major in school and this book is helping me remember some information that I previously learned but forgot in soc classes that I have taken.

I would recommend this book to people who are interested in sociology or curious about what sociology is. I enjoyed the part in the book that explains what careers sociologist have. I think this book, or at least this subject, should be required reading very early on- probably as early as middle school. I wish I would have known this stuff back when I was in High School, it would've helped me tremendously.
From the importance of forming social connections and networks, to understanding how corporations work, to understanding how people form norms and values, and achieve power and influence, in societies that are incredibly diverse and complex, the discoveries and revelations involved in Sociology really help you have empathy for others, and help you be prepared for participating in different organizations and societies. I've known from a very early age that there is much injustice and inequality in the world, and this book really gives some great insights into why that is the case.
Of all the information I've learned by reading this book, I think this was probably the most valuable.
I was kind of disappointed to read that Sociologists have given up on creating the perfect society, but I was pleased to read that they have great hope and enthusiasm for the future of humanity. Makes sociology so easy to learn! I am currently taking the actual class now and because do this book, I am flying through it with ease!
