Description Every years a comet travels close to Earth, opening a rift between dimensions that allows paranormal entities to travel through. These entities are called preternaturals and unfortunately most are criminals. As a result, human police forces work with preternatural Councils all over the world to handle matters of crime. When her vampire friend is murdered - the second vampire death in days - Nix is determined to find the killer.

Kiss of the Vampire

She is shocked to learn her former lover Tobias Caine - the vampire who'd walked out on her five years before - has been assigned to investigate with her. Rumours begin stirring that a demon may be responsible for the murders and Nix herself becomes a suspect but as more bodies turn up, the evidence points to Tobias's arch enemy, Natchook, whom Tobias felt was responsible for the assassination of his vampire leader centuries before.

The only problem is Tobias has no idea where Natchook may be hiding. With the Council determined to get rid of Nix and murders steadily on the rise, time is running out, forcing Tobias and Nix to put aside their past in hopes of saving their futures. Tobias and Nix's relationship is passion filled with hot love making and even hotter story lines.

I will eagerly be awaiting the next addition in this new series. Garner's world is peppered with strong fascinating character who come alive between the pages. I cannot wait for this series Warriors of the Rift to continue. Garner seamlessly combines paranormal romance and romantic suspense that has you on the edge of your seat. Garner has coming up next! Tobias did surprise me. Nix made him out to be some sort of jerk who just up and left her when her demon got totally out of control. But there was a purpose to his leaving and that he actually cared.

He could have at least been less callous about the way he just broke their relationship off. As for the Council, there's something shifty going on and I intend to find out when the next book in this series comes along. Mar 05, Lisarenee rated it it was amazing. Some are political exiles, some have left for religious reasons, but the majority were banned from their world for being criminals of the worst kind. Many see this as their second chance and attempt to reform and meld into society while others don't wish to give up their bad habits. It's the latter that the Council of Preternaturals hope to stop. Nix de la Fuentes is one of the liaisons between the authorities and the Council of Preternaturals. She's part human and part demon which satisfies both sides of the spectrum.

The politically correct term for what she is, is a hybrid and the incorrect term being half-breed. Nix has been called to the scene of a crime scene, the second in as many days. Someone appears to be targeting vampires and the kill methods suggests a preternatural was probably involved, but she's learned over the years never to assume anything without the proper evidence. Her job is to determine whether humans were involved.

What she finds when she gets to the scene, is that an old friend she'd lost touch with is the victim. To make matters worse, her old flame, Tobais, whom she hasn't seen since he walked out of her life, is the liaison between the vampires and the Council of Preternaturals. Some days make you wonder why you even bothered to get up. The world building Ms. Garner has done is phenomenal. While not every question I have has been answered, this is only the first in a brand new series so I'll remain patient and cross my fingers all will be answered eventually.

With a quick pace and plenty of action, drama, and suspense, I couldn't put the book down until I'd finished the last page. Nix has not lead an easy life. Her father was a human and her mother a demon. It was her mother who inadvertently killed her father. She is what we would term a succubus and she sort of sucked the life force out of him while in the throws of passion. Don't you hate it when that happens? Nothing could tame the hostility her grandmother felt toward her demon spawned grandchild. Eventually Nix gave up trying to win her grandmother's love and became the difficult child her grandmother preordained her to be.

That eventually lead to her living on the streets and gaining her street smarts and pickpocketing skills. Get her mad and she sprouts horns and a temper which can skyrocket to an astronomical level. Tobias Caine is a vampire who isn't like the other EDs. He came through the rift in pursuit of the criminal who assassinated his leader. He's been tracking his suspect for over a hundred years and plans to return to his home once he's apprehended him.

Five years ago he broke things off with Nix. He never told her the real reason he did it. If you're not happy in you marriage, get out of it before you start I liked the politics and prejudices that went on within that world. I loved how vampires emitted pheromones which could cause a girl's toes to curl without a single touch. It made me smile. You should use extreme caution when reading a book with this rating in public. People may inquire as to why you looked flustered and flushed. Overall, I gave this one 5 of 5 roses. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

I knew that it's a PR The story line read like a typical PR I did not expect to like this book as much as I do. Nix is a half demon living in a world where no one really likes demons She is a very strong female lead, but not afraid to be emotional. That So I picked this book up not really knowing what to expect.

That is a plus for me It's hard to find a good middle ground in PR's. Other characteristics of Nix She is written more as a regular person than most paranormal heroines are. Tobias is the lead male and he is a vampire. He is not as likable as Nix in my opinion. I think it is because he comes off too much as an Alpha Male. Don't get me wrong, I like me some Alpha Males For once, I would like to see someone a little more His characteristics are strong, focused, determined, kind, loving and completely dominant in every situation. He makes it known to everyone that he is in charge of this investigation and do not cross him.

It almost seems like that ones that are supposed to be in charge of him really aren't. He is the typical dominant man. He does, however, have some soft, tender and emotional moments It also grated on my nerves every time he called Nix honey. It just didn't sound right coming from him Dante is a detective with the human police force. He has been working with Nix on several cases for a little over a month now He knows what she is a doesn't care. He is kind, funny, strong, determined and very loyal.

I would have rather seen a relationship with him Nix and Tobias' relationship Nix explains that they dated for a year and then Tobias just left her out of nowhere.

See a Problem?

It is 5 years later and she is still hurt and confused. Things only get worse when he arrives back in town to help with a case she and Dante are on.

She tries to act relaxed and normal So she is a walking ball of turmoil trying to keep herself in line. For Tobias, he keeps trying to play it cool too but it isn't working out for him either. He is just as emotionally messed up as Nix and can't hold it in any longer. Finally, Tobias gives in and makes a move and the dance begins. It is back and forth between them He doesn't want to trigger her demoness, and she doesn't want to have her heart broken again.

Vampires are being murdered There doesn't seem to be any link between each victim Tobias, Nix and Dante are out together, hunting for information and not having much luck at all. Of course, a convenient little tip comes their way and things start adding up quickly.

So it is a hunt to find out why these vamps are being killed and who it behind it all. While hunting down the baddie, one member of this Scooby Gang gets seriously injured and life hangs in the balance. So, the race is on and it is a long road to the finish line for this crew. This was not a bad story all in all. No, I didn't partiularly like the male lead He was at least tolerable.

The mystery was what kept me page turning. It was written really well Either way, it was a good in between read for me. I will get the next book if Dante is the lead male Jan 26, Arianna rated it really liked it Shelves: Riusciranno Tobias e Nix a mettere da parte il loro passato per affrontare questa sfida? Dec 28, Cana Elene http: He thinks he can stay strong, not tempt her demon to come out and play, but in such tight quarters as looking for a murderer, things do not always go as planned. As secrets are revealed, and friends and enemies take their places in this game of life or death, will Nix and Tobias survive long enough to be together, or is forever too much to ask? Every now and then, you read a book that accomplishes all that you need a book to do. I mean, I read books all the time, and really I read for specific reasons.

It is what I do for fun, to relieve stress, and to just plain get away from the real world. And this book accomplished all three of those requirements. In this first book in the series Warriors of the Rift, Cynthia Garner creates a great spin on the preternaturals that we knew, loved and feared. Here we find out that preternaturals are not actually from Earth, but rather from another dimension, and they take over human bodies.

Through the rift every 73 years or so. Nix is a great character. Because she is part demon, she faces so much bias and discrimination; sometimes you would think that it would just be easier to forget about being half demon. She is now in her late twenties and is constantly worrying about loosing her sanity, her humanity. Then there is Tobias. He is the epitome of a great male character: He makes decisions to protect Nix, without consulting her… It is why they were separated for five years, because he felt that it was because of him that she would loose her sanity.

Honestly, you want him to protect you, because you know that it is done in love. With some great supporting characters, and some really funny scenes with Nix scrambling to do some tai chi, you can count on some humorous points mixed in with the blood, guts, and romance. I must say, I really liked this book. I mean, it was good introduction, but I think that there could have been a better one, maybe with a bit more explanation of vampires or demons.

Jan 06, Stephanie rated it liked it. Imprint-Forever January 31, Original post at: This book ties Supernatural creatures and science fiction up in one nice neat package. The theory is that a comet allows, and has for milennia, a rift to open between another dimension and Earth. Beings go through or are pushed through the dimension and take the bodies of other beings.

All types of paranormals do this. I am not sure how well the theory behind this Urban Fantasy has been thought out by the author.

Some is laid out and I think other aspects will develop as the series does. I enjoyed the individual characters. Nix, is half-human and half-demon; a group that usually goes insane as one side fights the other. Dante is a fully human police detective, and Tobias is a vampire working for the Paranormal Council which is highly political and corrupt. He is around 2, years old. Nix is in her late twenties. They were lovers but he abandoned her five years prior to help preserve her humanity. Dante is their side kick. Although at a few points in the book they refer to him being no match for any preternatural, they leave him on his own to fight it out.

Aside from my disbelief that a man of Tobias' age would be interested in a 23 year-old, the relationship is on nothing other than sex. When they see each other after five years their initial reactions are first sexual. Then hers becomes anger. When they see each other throughout the book there is very little reason other than sexual chemistry to connect them. The sex is also somewhat crudely written. I did like how Tobias is not described as the most perfect or handsome man ever.

He is described as delectable and well-muscled, but no where does the author call him perfect or describe his clothes in detail. Additonally, I was annoyed by the constant repetition of back story, almost at the start of each chapter. We constantly learn how Nix's mother was terrible, how her grandmother threw away gifts NIx made her. Either the author is padding the story is is using a public speaking technique of "Tell them what you are going to tell them and then tell them what you told them.

In a work of fiction it is just redundant. I think the series shows promise. It's an interesting idea, but there has to be more to a relationship than penis size and a little more development for the world-building as well. The council seems really one-dimensional; I would like to see more of the councilors who are not biased and aggressively judgmental. But, both series are part of the genre's building blocks, so it's pretty natural. I would like to know if others see parallels.

Since the concept is interesting, I reserve judgment on recommending this until I see where the series goes. Jan 22, Jen Davis rated it liked it. Cynthia Garner puts a new twist on the supernatural with this first installment in her Warriors of the Rift series. In this world, vampires, shifters, and even demons were all once humans. But through a rift in space, the essence of otherworldly beings took over their bodies and now use them as vessels.

The extra-terrestrial energies convert them into the preternatural creatures of legend. Nix is a demon hybrid: Her life is a constant struggle to suppress her Cynthia Garner puts a new twist on the supernatural with this first installment in her Warriors of the Rift series. Her life is a constant struggle to suppress her demon side and hold on to her sanity. She works as a liaison between human law enforcement and the supernatural council.

As the story begins, she is investigating the deaths of two vampires. She realizes one of the victims was an old friend, just as her ex-boyfriend shows up as a special investigator on the scene. Nix loved Tobias, but he walked out on her five years ago and never looked back.

Seeing him shakes her control and leaves her angry and heartbroken all over again. What Nix doesn't know is that Tobias never stopped loving her, but he left her for noble reasons. Now they must both fight their feelings for one another as they work to figure out who is behind the continuing killing spree. As the murders point the finger at a bigger conspiracy, they are left wondering who they can trust --and what the killer's end game really is. I liked the concept of book and I liked Nix as a main character.

She is strong and determined to overcome the obstacles she faces. But it was hard to watch the way she is rejected and betrayed over and over again.

Kiss Of The Vampire : Cynthia Garner :

I found myself fixated on the mechanics of hybridization inside the rules of the world building. It just didn't click in my mind that the otherworldly-essence would pass on to a child. It also bothered me that almost all of the preternatural characters are ancient, but I felt very little gravitas from any of them.

They didn't feel hundreds or thousands of years old. They felt just like traditional supes. Plus --I just didn't feel like the idea of their displaced consciousness was explored the way it needed to be. Who and what were they as individuals before the rift? Mostly criminals, I gather. But it's just so sweepingly vague. I also have to question what draws a year-old being, hyper-focused on a vengeance mission, to a 23 year-old girl. We have few details on Tobias and Nix's backstory. I never really got why they were in love.

They're hot in the sack, and he calls her "honey" ALOT, but beyond that, I only know they are in love because the author told me. The book isn't bad, but all of my issues with it, kept me from really connecting with it or becoming invested in the characters. I will give it credit, though, for trying something new and for not going the predictable route with the killer. Kiss of the Vampire is exceedingly slow to get going, the suspense back plot and the former lovers poised on the brink of rekindling the flame has potential, but initially there isn't a great deal of build up in the investigation or of romantic tension, and both parts of the story take well in to the second half of the book to finally gain some momentum.

Things that worked for me: I really liked the secondary character, Dante who is the human cop working on the case with Nix and Tobias - I liked Dante's sense of humor and so I am glad to see that he takes the lead in the next book. I thought that the different take on origins of paranormal species had potential - paranormal creatures are actually criminals who were disembodied for their crimes and their essence forced through a periodic dimensional rift into our world where they possess a dead or dying humans.

For reasons unknown, some of theses extra-dimensionals EDs become vampires, or shape shifters or elves or demons or other supernatural creatures. Things that worked less well for me: Also I had questions about the world that weren't answered — since demons are created by EDs possessing a human, how do they end up with half human children? Once things finally get going and the pair finally start uncovering the reason for the murders and decide to give each other another chance, the story does finish well and I give the author Cynthia Garner, who also writes as Sherrill Quinn, credit for trying to offer a new spin on the origins of supernaturals, even though there are a few kinks to work out for the next Rift Warriors book, Secret of the Wolf.

Jan 22, Mary Gramlich rated it really liked it. Being an enforcement officer under all circumstances is tough. For Nix de la Fuente she lives in a time where vampires, demons, and all sorts of creatures of the day and night roam. She is half-demon herself so her position is a help and a hindrance because not everyone trusts the non-human breed. Nix finds herself even further complicated at a crime scene when her former lover Tobias Caine, Vampire Liaison shows up.

Nix has shown she can control her demon except when Tobias shows up then all she can think about is the feel of her fingers as they brush against his skin. And I'm happy you enjoyed it.
