He mocks the idea that fate responds only to self interest. I recommend this book highly. You can never go wrong with Dickens! Hard Times is a timely novel considering it was written in the nineteenth century. It deals with class warfare. The main characters are chewed up and spewed out of Coketown. They were expendables who were part of the factory. I see many parallels with today's worker who's used up by corporate culture and government.
Now many people want to do away the safety nets and resort to "survival of fittest. Dickens is the consummate story teller. He weaves a tapestry of personality and place with an unerring eye for detail and authenticity. In Hard Times he creates a contrast between those who live by objective standards and those who exist in a world of sense and feelings.
His characters, especially the more mature, remind one of some they might have known, who reflected similarly, their life experiences. Some real other imagined. The benefit of reading this Classic lies in the timeless and true messages. A young person might enrich their decision making ability by learning from the mistakes of someone in the story who alters their life by making the wrong ones.
At the end, regardless of the readers age, you are left with much to think about. I will always love Dickens for his anger and sharp criticism of the cold institutions of his time and wonder what he would write about our present circumstances. I think his words would be sharp ondeed.
One person found this helpful. I purchased this book to read on my Kindle as the DVD had proved faulty half way through and I wanted to know the end of the story. It is quite a short novel compared to other stories by Dickens. I enjoyed reading it very much and realised how much richer the detail was in the written version. The illustrations were helpful and gave extra detail about clothing and furnishings etc in the nineteenth century.
This story is enjoyable and easy to approach if you have not read Dickens before. The principles of the approach to education and the results as demonstrated by events in the story add richness to the narrative. It contains very good descriptions of industrial working conditions during the steam driven machine age and living conditions in a town which had many tall smoky chimneys from the factories.
Worth a read and not at all hard going. These lesser known Dickens books are just as engrossing as the well-known ones.

I'm sold on Penguin Classics because of the helpful notes for each chapter that explain "old" and "British" expressions I wouldn't understand. See all reviews. See all customer images. Most recent customer reviews.

The societal structure of the fictional Coketown bears much relevance to our own society submerged deep under consumerism, disparity in distribution of wealth, a world laden with figures and facts forgetting the true inane nature of humanity.
As always, the characters are much powerful, vibrant, sometimes clumsy and melancholic which all only adds to the vivacious plot. After having finished reading the book, one cannot but wonder at how the author had masterfully woven an intricate and complex story into something which could be easily and readily understood by the reader. Characters like Bounderby, the whelp, Louisa and Sissy are only reflective of the people in society. This book proves that no matter the place and time, people would and will always succumb to their primal and base wants irrespective of other's welfare.

However characters like Sissy Jupe and Mr. Sleary render us hope in 'Hard Times'.

Mass Market Paperback Verified Purchase. The book is at excellent value. However, the page quality is rather yellow in colour, so if you are making pencil notes to use as a study book, remember to use a very dark pencil to enable legible text to be written. One person found this helpful. Otherwise you will find yourself trying to make sense at every 3rd paragraph. It's a simple sailing plot.
The story reveals the difficulties faced by a family in the industrial england. About the book, the book is not well printed, somewhere the print is slanted, somewhere there is no print and the font size is too small. Besides this, it is not a must read but a good read. I am disappointed with the book I received. The one I received was not the same that was shown in the image of the book when I purchased it is the same image that I see now. It means that I didn't get the book from the same publisher as shown in the image and hence reading experience was also different and not up to the level I expected.
