Ethnographic studies typically present rich data, but often fail to contribute to any disciplinary, theoretical, or substantive concern. While Niklas Luhmann is certainly not known for conducting qualitative research, his theory of society can help increase the sociological relevance of ethnography.
Although there are many possible ways for ethnographers to use constructs from systems theory in their research, this article concludes by suggesting that fieldworkers experiment with documenting the real time use of structural couplings and symbolically generalized differences. Ethnographers appear to be fascinated by what they immediately experience as fieldworkers.
However, although they represent themselves as participant observers, they have neglected to develop a theory of observation. Systems theorists have a theory of second order observation, but they tend to avoid conducting fieldwork. In this paper, we argue that systems theory and ethnography can effectively supplement each other. Drawing on the concept of self-reference, we examine the relationship between perception, observation, and understanding.
Description
Meaning and culture appear only in the light of self-reference. As participants, ethnographers must not only observe what happens in the field; but they must also observe connections between empirical events. They must observe the process of selectivity that uses meaning to differentiate what actually happens from alternative possibilities. For its part, a theoretically informed ethnography would help extend the scope of systems theoretical research beyond functional and historical analyses.
Making their observations in the form of ethnography, systems theorists might focus on explaining how social practices unfold themselves with reference to the social dimension of meaning.

The author observes the art of singing barbershop from the perspective of contemporary social systems theory, employing concepts such as unity in difference, self-reference, autopoiesis, noise, and communication. Barbershop is a style of unaccompanied singing with three voices harmonizing to the melody an ensemble of four voices. Depending on the perception of noise for its own operations, the social system of barbershop organizes human vocal noise into music with the help of communication. This paper describes the problems barbershop singers must solve to meaningfully reproduce the specific form of their art.
The emergence and continuation of barbershop as a social system can be considered highly unlikely, requiring much more than the willing participation of human singers. The improbable construction of barbershop depends on semantic and structural resources made available within interaction, organization, and society: The members of an Old Order Mennonite community successfully enact the rituals of foot washing, baptism, expulsion, and reconciliation without a common understanding of what the rituals are supposed to signify or why they are meaningful.
The symbols and rituals of Mennonites appear to simulate unity in the group without reference or connection to the individual beliefs of members.
