No fancy setting or intrigue, just plenty of sizzle as this pair learns to move past the past. Love that it focused on the couple, and didn't let their story and growth get lost. Matt Briggs had bought a ranch and was ready to settle down when he received the text that changed his life. With the unexpected passing of his father, Matt has more responsibilities than he can handle between taking care of his family and two ranches.
The last thing he needs is the girl that broke his heart coming back to town trying to make herself feel better. When his family works to keep Larissa in town for another week As they spend time together, Larissa has to figure what her dream really is and whether she belongs in Cheyenne. I enjoyed this story and these characters.
Both have had a tough time and things haven't worked out quite as expected. They have taken some emotional hits and have to learn to trust themselves and each other to find the future they deserve. This was a sweet second-chance romance with main characters and secondary characters that worked well together and propelled the story line with ease.
The writing is fun, and I found myself rooting for Matt and Larissa to figure things out. Though it is part of a series, the story can easily be read as a stand alone. Second Chance Cowboy is the story of Larissa and Matt, and as you might guess from the title, this is a second chance romance story, which I should say is one of my favorite tropes. By the way this is book two from the Road to Romance series but it can be read as a standalone. The premise is simple enoug I'd consider this book a must read if you're a Joanne Rock fan but I'd also totally recommend this book to lovers of the romance genre, I really enjoyed this story, it was very charming and sweet.
The premise is simple enough; our heroine Larissa is on her way to a dancing audition in Las Vegas but first she wants to make a stop in her hometown, hoping to make amends with her former boyfriend after she left pursuing her dancing career. Larissa is hoping that by doing this she could free herself from past guilts and demons and have a new start.
But this is won't be a simple sorry and goodbye; she ends up caught up in the wake of the wedding of Matt's sister. Matt for his part isn't also looking to complicate things, specially since he was really hurt by that first time that Larissa left him. But as they start spending time together, they start to realize that their feelings haven't dispensary completely, like they've merely been dormant and now they seem to be stronger than before, more intense. Still they'll both have to really look inside themselves and figure out what they want.
The story is very moving, yes this is a romance but there's also a really good message in the story, about fulfilling your dreams and also ultimately deciding what you want in life. Joanne Rock's characters are believable and easy to relate to and care for; the story engages you and there's a good pacing to the book, it's a very quick read but also a delightful one. Matt will do his best to make Larissa see what she has been missing. I really like the strong, independent main female character. Matt sounded too good to be true. Every girl should be so lucky to find a guy like Matt. Aug 20, Margaret Sholders rated it it was amazing.
I love to read Tule Publishing books. The Kincaid family is extraordinary, messy, funny and fiercely protective of one another. I was captivated by that whole family. The romance is what fell completely flat for me. Lily was a frustrating enigma who I tried hard to connect with but couldn't. Her reasoning for keeping Aidan at bay felt hollow, unrealistic and irritating. I tried but couldn't even like her that much. While the romance failed for me , everything else about the story was delightful.
The Kincaid family dynamics were often hilarious, always entertaining. The next book, which is previewed in this one, has already hooked me. The romance, at least from the first chapter, seems much more promising. View all 14 comments. This review can also be found at Carole's Random Life. I really enjoyed every minute of this story. I am pretty sure that this is the first book by Jill Shalvis that I have read which is pretty amazing when you consider how many books she has written and the fact that I am constantly reading. This is one of those rare cases when I can tell you exactly the one thing that made me This review can also be found at Carole's Random Life. This is one of those rare cases when I can tell you exactly the one thing that made me love this book. That one thing is Aiden. He is just a fantastic character and I loved absolutely every single thing about him. If I lived in Cedar Ridge, I would probably get myself lost in the woods just so he could come and save me.
Every page that Aiden was on left me smiling. All I have to do is think about this hot firefighting guy and I still find myself grinning. It has been a really long time since I fell head over heels in love with Hero like this. Don't get me wrong, I liked Lily as well but she was no Aiden. Lily had some spunk and was able to accept what life had brought her. She wasn't happy about her situation but she tried to make the most of it.
The way that she dealt with the issues from her past felt authentic to me and I have to admit that I would not have handled gathering my own wood nearly as well as she did in this story. I loved all of Aiden's family and his firefighter partner, Mitch. I think that sometimes romance novels can get bogged down by too many additional characters but every single character that was introduced in this book actually added to the story. The cast of characters in this story added a lot of lighthearted humor which really made the book a lot of fun.
I am really looking forward to seeing some of these characters again in future installments. I liked Aiden and Lily as a couple. I liked the fact that this was a second chance romance with both of them still having feelings for each other. I think in this case the fact that they were both hesitant to jump into anything really showed how much they cared about each other. In some ways, their relationship seemed to move very quickly but they still held something back from each other.
I did like the way the romance progressed overall. I would recommend this book to fans of contemporary romance.

A heartwarming start to a series that made me laugh, blush and left me wanting more. Can she face the ghosts of her past as well as the sexy firefighter with the overwhelming smile? Not because of him. The knowledge at once changed things for him and also devastated him—for her. Ten years ago he let Lily go. But can he convince Lily to stay long enough so he can save her from herself and give them a real chance? Aidan Kincaid is no exception.
For the past decade, he tried to mend his crushed heart and move on. So I was very happy when she finally gave in to the love and care of a wonderful man. He picked up her purse and handed it over. I love how Jill not only develops loveable main characters, she also builds an entire community around them with friends and family with gorgeous backdrops I relish reading about. Two words for you: Jill Shalvis has become an automatic go-to author for her fabulous writing, wonderful plots and character development.
I cannot wait to read more of this new series to see how the Kincaids save their family business while keeping up with the hijinks. Can be read as a standalone with a happy ending. The excerpts are from that copy. View all 7 comments. I spent most of this book waiting for the main characters to get over themselves, already, and talk. Seriously, the first half of this book would have been short-circuited by a single discussion and every encounter where they didn't have that discussion was excruciating.
Which is too bad. Both Lily and Aiden are my favorite types of characters, normally. Strong, kind, protective man. Brave, caring, and adventurous woman. Seriously, I should have been half in love by chapter two. And I kind of sta I spent most of this book waiting for the main characters to get over themselves, already, and talk. And I kind of started down that path, only to be brought up short by their emotionally-stunted stupidity. Seriously, I had a very hard time. Things smooth out a bit after the half-way point and at least Aiden isn't the typical commitment-phobe you sometimes get in these stories.
He's quiet and frustrating, but not stereotypical. And Lily starts making break throughs as soon as she starts actually talking to people, and that helped, too. Not that Shalvis didn't throw in a few dumb moments that felt very out of place, even then. How dumb does he have to be? I mean seriously, that was beyond stupid.
And frankly, Lily forgiving him for that felt forced, too. I'll almost certainly pick up the next. But this was still very disappointing to me. A note about Steamy: Mid level steam for me. Maybe a bit upward. Three explicit scenes, and some of them went on a bit. It took them forever to get that far, though, so it felt like they were bigger than they were because they were so crammed in towards the end. Jill Shalvis is one of my favorite authors so when I heard she was starting up a new series, I was excited.

This smacks of poor story development and it isn't my experience with Ms. Not sure what is going on, but I've thought her last few books are average and don't pull me like some I've enjoyed of a few years ago. She may have lost her mojo or maybe I've lost my interest in her storytelling. Dec 20, Mandy rated it it was amazing Shelves: I really enjoyed this book! I loved that there was humor, family, romance and a beautiful setting.
This was so good! I can't wait to read the next book in this series! I swear, her small town romances never fail to charm. The characters — new and old — worm their way into my heart each and every time. Her antics and meddling were classic Jill Shalvis humor. One of my favorite things about Second Chance Summer is the dynamic among these characters. They tease each other mercilessly, they fight occasionally, and through it all they always offer support and a shoulder to lean on. I loved seeing the brothers interact and getting to know them that way.
They played off each other so well. Lily it took me more time to warm up to. He was being such a great support system for her, but she constantly pushed him away out of fear. I think this is a formula Jill uses in most of her romances, and it works better for some than it does for others. The chemistry is definitely there between Lily and Aidan, but I thought the back and forth went on a little too long. Second Chance Summer has a loveable new cast of characters — and more specifically a group of sexy brothers — that are sure to charm you and have you wholeheartedly believing in true love.

And it was indeed a great read! Jill Shalvis has a knack of creating these perfect, adorable towns. Lily Danville has returned to Cedar Ridge after a decade. When some tragic occur accidents in her life Lily can't cope up with those and she gives up living in the town and goes to San Diego. When she runs into trouble there and is out of job, after ten years she is forced to return to Cedar Ridge as her friend Jonathan offers her a job.
Aidan Kincaid is a firefighter and volunteers for the local Search-and-Rescue team. He lives with his family in his family's Cedar Ridge Resort. The resort is struggling so he and his brothers are doing everything to save the family resort. He is very protective of his family. Aidan always had a thing for Lily but when she left town abruptly he was hurt, so when she returns to town, he tries to keep his distance from her and not get too emotionally involved but he can't stop himself from wanting to help and protect Lily.
Lily always had a crush on Aidan but due to some misunderstandings, she wants to keep distance but it doesn't happen that way of course. Her encounters with Aidan are pretty funny too. But they have great chemistry and so they can't stay away from each other. After some communication everything works out in the end.
I loved the story. Aidan and Lily were great, I quite liked Aidan's family as well. It was a great start to the series. I am looking forward to the next book. Some of my favourite quotes: The first book in Jill Shalvis' Cedar Ridge series. Lily Danville left Cedar Ridge, Colorado, ten years ago when tragedy struck her family. She lost both her sister and then her father within a week. When she left she left Aidan Kincaid behind too. Aidan is now a firefighter and assists in search and rescue, along with helping out at the family resort.
The resort that Lily will be working at temporarily until she finds another position far away. Aidan Kincaid is stunned to learn that Lily is back in town. But should he risk his heart knowing she has no intention of staying? Another series by Jill Shalvis. I am already loving the folks of Cedar Ridge! Well, most of them anyway. Aidan and Lily were a great couple and I look forward to more. It wasn't bad per se , it was just Shalvis can do better, that's probably why I was underwhelmed. Will Aidan change his dangerous lifestyle for the woman who fears it all? Read their engaging story to find out. Ten years later, they have to face their inner demons, or lose the love they both deserve. I found Aidan and his friends, as well as his brothers, highly entertaining. They're smart alecks toward one another because they have a lifetime of ammunition to use against each other.
Their antics often lightened tense moments, which offsets the danger they face in a mountain resort area where anything can happen. As quirky as Lily is, she also has a heartrending story to tell. Her friends at the salon where she works are very funny and the gossip that occurs can really stir up some trouble for everyone. I think that Lily and Aidan are well-matched, while this book allowed me to get to know the other characters through their interactions with this couple. It's a great kick-off to a series that fans will enjoy and a good example for first-timers to find out why we keep coming back for more.
Jill Shalvis once again works her magic by tugging at our heartstrings, then soothing them with laugh-out-loud dialogue and mannerisms. I cried and laughed my way through this book and especially enjoyed the Colorado setting that serves as a great backdrop for a love story. View all 4 comments. Hightailing it out of there after losing her sister and father to tragic circumstances, Lily has never looked back even when it meant leaving Aidan Kincaid behind. Aidan Kincaid spends his days fighting fires and rescuing stray climbers and his nights trying to keep his mismatched group of siblings together.
Abandoned years ago by their father, the Kincaids have had to fight and scratch for survival like feral cats always on the brink of disaster. When Lily walks back into town, Aidan finally has the chance to carve out a future of his very own. If only he can get lily to open up and tell him why she turned her back on them so many years ago. The reader can sit back and enjoy their witty repartee and steamy encounters and not overly worry whenever drama comes knocking at the door.
I loved the rapport these siblings had with each other and the fierce love and protective nature they all had for one another despite how they all came together. Jul 01, Rachel rated it really liked it Shelves: I don't know how long it's been for the heroine, but it's been at least a month for the hero. He had a girl he was seeing casually that he hadn't been with in over a month. The hero has a busy work schedule balancing like 3 jobs, so sex is not always in Overall rating: The hero has a busy work schedule balancing like 3 jobs, so sex is not always in his focus.
The heroine is very hesitant because of her sister's death. It was their rivalry that ultimately lead to her death and on top of that, her sister had had a crush on the hero as well. After her death, she left and never looked back. Her and the hero had only shared a kiss at that point, but her leaving left a hole in his heart. At first when she comes back to town, he doesn't know if he should pursue his feelings because he wasn't sure if she would leave again, but he just can't help himself. Once, right after he finds out and sees that the heroine is back in town, his brother didn't know and let her in his room when the hero was out on a call.
She is naked in his bed and tries to seduce him, but he simply can't bring himself to even care that she is there. And he DOES want sex, but not with her. He doesn't touch her or anything. She ends up getting the picture really loud and clear and when he tells her it's more than him not being in the mood and that they are REALLY done, she gets very upset.
She is a bar tender so she shows up later and threatens to do something to his drink. That's really about it. I wouldn't consider that ow drama at all because she was a non-issue hide spoiler ] HEA: I am getting so tired of reading the same old shit and I am getting tired of authors putting all of these OW scenes in every freaking book.
What happened to actual romance that focuses on the damn couple and not all this other shit?
