I read this book years ago, before doing reviews. Here the H agrees to marry the h because he is in serious debt to her father. Her father doesn't want the h to know that it's an arranged marriage so the H has to win her over first. I loved the first part of the book where the main characters begin to know each other and the h falls in love with the H.

I will just say that I don't like reading about my H's having sex with someone else once they've met the h. I don't know it just seems tacky. Anyway, all is going well until just before the wedding and the H finds out about the deception. It's not a bad story but I did feel sorry for the H.

The plot is one that has been used by others. Almost from the beginning the reader can pretty accurately deduce how the story will play out. Unfortunately, no surprises there. At first, I liked the heroine but later I just got tired of the same incessant internal dialogue and assumptions going on in her head. I liked the hero quite a bit, particularly because of the growth of his character by the end.

Overall, the story felt rather contrived and I probably will never read this book again. I would've given it 5 stars but the heroine seemed a bit too unforgiving for too long for my tastes. Other than that, it was an enjoyable read. Mass Market Paperback Verified Purchase. The nerd gets her playboy! What a wonderful adventure this was, so filled with emotion.

The love scenes were so wonderful and passionate and sweet. Grace was a perfect character, didn't do anything stupid, and never denied her feelings outright. Jack was also a great hero. He didn't do anything stupid or mean or brutal. But the rich merchant who holds his debt insists Jack lead his on-the-shelf daughter to the altar.

With no options, Jack agrees, thinking he'll be shackled to a closed-in spinster. But Grace Danvers is no milk-and-water miss.

Why not have the fun, since they're already married? And then they did just that and man, what a honeymoon!

Initially I would've said, "Hold on girl, give him his comeuppance But I guess her way is good as well. I can so understand her standing, loving a man who doesn't deserve that kinda love and devotion. I really feel for her.

I'm waiting to see what happens next now that they've returned from their honeymoon. I hope Jack eats his words. Man, apart from sex, he pisses me off sometimes so much, I wanna break something, preferably on his head! Sadly, she wont be Let's enjoy while it lasts Really, have to admit that TAW writes hot hot love scenes and sexual tension between the characters.

Her books would be 5 stars if it played out just like that in other areas, too. I've thought of many things while finishing the book but have to say, Jack did make me cry in the end. I mean, seeing what an idiot he was throughout the book, have to admit that's a big feat! He stayed with her when he heard she was pregnant, he was faithful and celibate when she was sick Even Grace was amazed! Gotta say he improved to take it by heart to prove himself and his love to an indifferent Grace and even if it was a gamble, he impressed me as well.

I did see vulnerabilities in him, emotional ones, that given to his thick head ahemm, I didn't expect him to feel. Grace, hmm, she coped well enough given the fact that she saw him kissing his ex-mistress. Here Jack didn't really initiate the kiss but was kissing back just to see if his new found feeling for Grace was real or not and man, I wanted to strangle him!

I thought she should've thrown those shoes to his face instead of the closed door! He deserved no less. I don't blame her a bit for not trusting him, even when he confessed he loved her. And, she did the right thing by going away IMO. Now, I wish in between the narratives, lots of time didn't pass by ie: TAW tends to do that and then the narrative kinda becomes lose, feels like she's jumping. Nevertheless, I liked that she used less first person monologues then her earlier books, which sometimes proved to be quite irritating. I really loved the love scenes, even the ones where they didn't talk but let their bodies talk instead.

A 4 for me. Sep 13, Quirkygal rated it liked it. Maybe my hopes were a little too high for this book. While Warren writes with her usual aplomb and accuracy there was something off in this high stakes regency tale. For me, I think it comes down to Grace Danvers our spinster heroine.

Bestselling Series

In the first part of the book she seemed like a strong, feisty, determined woman - the kind of person who I'd want to befriend - but towards the end of the story I wasn't sure what happened to her or where her personality went. Yes what happened was a shocking blow Maybe my hopes were a little too high for this book. Yes what happened was a shocking blow and she had every reason to loose confidence and faith in her man but it felt like someone else wrote the character towards the end of the book.

As for Lord John "Jack," well he did grow in the book and toward the end stepped up to the plate but I would have liked to see more of the couple after their reconciliation and to learn how they handled Grace's well meaning but high handed father. I also missed the rest of the Byron clan in this book - in the first book they offered a great backdrop of care, concern, reaction, and humor - and found the brief five pages we spent with them on Christmas morning not nearly enough.

Oh, and is anyone else worried for Lady Mallory's love? This book was just so blah. The plot was good enough to have ensured atleast an above average read. But, unfortunately it didn't turn out that way. First of all, we don't see a genuine love build between these two people. He's chasing her obviously because of the debt etc , and every now and then, the author puts in a perfunctory line about how she is not as unattractive he thought she would be and we're supposed to understand that he's developing real feelings for her. It's almost as if, since i This book was just so blah.

It's almost as if, since its a romance novel, the author expects us to assume that these two people have to obviously be falling in love. More importantly, my biggest problem with this book is the fact that the guy doesn't really feel too guilty even after his secret is out. Sure, he drinks one brandy one whole night, and has bloodshot eyes the next day.

But,beyond that, there was no down on the knees, begging for forgiveness, being unable to forgive oneself kind of grovelling. Given the circumstances, I really couldn't give this book more than two stars.

Jun 03, Kagama-the Literaturevixen rated it it was ok Shelves: I thought this book started out interesting with the heroines father blackmailing the H to marry his daughter. Its an old plot as far as regencies go but done well it can be good. H starts to pop up wherever the h goes, and I could really symphatize with her confusion at suddenly being chased by such an eligible bachelor.

Up to this point I was enjoying the book. Then things got racy I felt he fell a little to conveniently for her and after she agreed to marry him they did little but have sex and I thought this book started out interesting with the heroines father blackmailing the H to marry his daughter. I felt he fell a little to conveniently for her and after she agreed to marry him they did little but have sex and nothing else.

I mean a little steaminess is good in a romance, but the H got me wondering if he was some kind of sex-addict Nov 23, Ami rated it did not like it Shelves: I tried so hard to not DNF this book. But the problem with this book is just that it's so emotionless - I feel nothing for these characters, I feel nothing with these characters, etc. Even at the parts where there was supposed to be great angst when she finds out that he's been lying to her about the money all along , I felt nothing.

There were shitloads of cliches, not enough groveling from the main hero - I also coul I tried. There were shitloads of cliches, not enough groveling from the main hero - I also couldn't feel like this was much of a historical. The setting was not well described at all or just described at all. So to sum it up, I pushed myself until about halfway through the book where I just gave up. Dec 30, DemetraP rated it liked it. Hero falls in like, then in love with heroine. Heroine shows backbone and when the deception is revealed, doesn't let hero walk all over her. Feb 07, Vijetha rated it it was ok Shelves: He is never the one to bet too much or be swayed by luck.

But one game changes his life forever. Now he is left with two option. Either seduce and marry the Cit's daughter or prison. Miss Grace Denvers is firmly on the shelf. She doesn't mind it as long has she has her passion. But a chance meeting with Jack leaves her wanting more. It's highly unlikely that a duke's brother might want anything from her. But every touch and glance by Jack leaves her breathless and wanting to throw caution into wind.

When Jack suddenly realizes that the seducer has become the seduced, he must make sure to convince Grace of his love above his deceit. I was really excited about this book. The blurb indicated a marriage of convenience plot. But it was the first time I'd seen a groom being blackmailed by the bride's father. That is until the novelty wore off. The entire story was disappointing. I do agree that there were moments when I liked the book.

But the majority of times I was either caught in disbelief or exaggerated. It is the first time ever that I disliked both the protagonists. I wish the author had taken time to develop the characters. Jack was a rake with a good hand at cards. Also he could memorize things fast. That was the only trait his character had. His passion, hobbies, aversions weren't mentioned. Why would a girl like Grace fall in love with this aimless character? Lust, I can understand.

She doesn't know anything about him. Grace was equally weird. She expressed her love within one third of the book. The author just alludes to the supposed deep and connected conversations between Grace and Jack. I would have been really thrilled if she had penned a few. Also Grace is fickle. She decides she hates Jack, but marries him. She sees him kissing a lady, believes him when he implores he was innocent but still pushes him away. I couldn't for the life of me understand her decisions. They were fickle at best and diabolical at worst. Maybe it was the fact that I expected more, or the first 30 pages of the novel were promising.

Whatever the reason I was soundly disappointed. I am intrigued by Edward. And probably I will take another chance on Warren and read his book. But I really can't say more. I just felt that it would raise my hackles so I decided to stay away from this genre. Luckily this book was nothing like that. I freaking loved this book so much.

It had everything that I want out Aside from Diana Palmer books and a few highlander books, I tend to not read historical romance with the reason being that I would not take to highly to the high handed male dominated society and the oppression of women where their most important function was being a wife and a mother and that was it. It had everything that I want out of a romance.

It reminded me of early Diana Palmer books that had me fall in love with the romance genre. It had the passion, the angst, the emotions, misunderstandings, intensity, anticipating, hot and steamy love scenes, and gut wrenching emotions that ripped my heart along the way. The characters were great too. I really loved Jack and Grace both together and separately. And even though this was a historical romance, it was subtle and I wasn't bombarded by the context of the time period where it could have be disconcerting trying to get the lay of the time.

It was done in a way that wasn't overwhelming, which was good. Less uppity society in this on even though Jack was a lord. He wasn't a snob nor were there any snobs in this story so that was really good. I could just sit back and enjoy the love story on the page without being distracted by the historical aspects of the story. It was like I was reading any other romance that I have read and throughly enjoyed and even loved.

In this book I wasn't sickened by the attitude of society and the treatment of women. I don't know if all historical romances are like that or if it was just the way that it was written that I forgot it was a historical yet the historical elements I definitely embraced in this story. There was so much growth from beginning to end and it was shown so clearly by Jack and Grace's actions. I loved seeing them fall in love especially in Jack's case.

I could honestly see the point where he was falling in love with Grace and just how his whole attitude changed from the beginning. It was more about than the bet, and it was really great to see him fall deeper and deeper in love with Grace as time went by. Those moments really touched my heart. One scene that came to mind was when he asked for a second chance at a real marriage for them, it showed where he was at emotional without spelling it all out. It was shown instead of told. Another scene that came to mind was when they separated.

I could feel his heart breaking and in turn broke my heart in the process. Yet another scene that came to mind was where he finally told her he loved her. My heart soared yet at the same time broke because she wasn't sure she could trust him and he knew that's where she was at. It was such an emotional and tender scene and so well written that I don't think declaration scenes could get any higher than that. It was raw and pure and completely genuine. I believed every little thing in this romance. It felt very complex and very real.

Loved their relationship and just their whole romance. Lots of tenderness and romantic moments that weren't just bedroom related. Speaking of bedroom related, the passion between the two was so incredible hot, sexy, and tender at the same time. They had great chemistry that just carried on through the story that made me anticipate ever move they made. It never felt forced or contrived but felt very natural and fluid. I was surprised at the amount of sexy times scenes especially for the time period and a lot of those scenes happening before they married then later on after they married.

Do all historicals have that many love scenes? Not that I am complaining, but makes me understand why the genre is so popular and loved by so many. I totally get it then. But anyway with this story I loved every love and was surprised how good they were as well as showed the development in their relationship. The beginning ones were more lust bases while the later ones were more about love and tenderness. I just loved to see that range. It got me sweating at times and kept my eyes locked to the page. All I can say. I loved everything about this book, and I don't have a single complaint.

I think this was the perfect introduction to the genre. I could go on and on about this one with nothing but praise and love for it. This is going to be a favorite of mine and I will definitely be reading this one over and over again. I just want to absorb myself again in the magic. It was just so good. Like I said I don't know if all historical romances are like this or if it was just this story that really connected with me. I just felt so much while reading this book, and I didn't want to put it down for a single second.

Love is the best way to describe this book for me. Now if all historical romances are like this one then I am in big trouble because I don't need yet another genre to add to my reading lists. I have too many books already, I don't need more, but if they are then I might be pursuing the historical romance section a little bit more and seeing if I find any favorites or loves to add to my favorites list.

Yet as of right now I can't judge historicals as a whole since I haven't read a lot.

There were bits of this that I enjoyed immensely. I though the plot had so many good things to it, and I liked the characters very much.

The build up of their relationship was very well done. However, the second part of the book didn't hold the same interest for me. It sort of lost its charm and dragged on to the point where I just kept reading it to get to the end. As a side note, the first time I started reading this book I thought I'd gotten about one third through, so Ok so, where to start? As a side note, the first time I started reading this book I thought I'd gotten about one third through, so when I picked it up again, I restarted the whole thing from scratch Well, it turned out that the more I kept reading, the more I remembered, and I'd actually gotten pretty far in the first time around and I'd completely forgotten about it Which isn't a good sign at all.
