Police are searching for a missing mother and daughter. Second set of police raids leads to eight arrests 1. Hundreds turn out to see lights switched on. Disabled dad disgusted at uncollected waste. Volunteers devastated as centre is targeted twice.
Grandfather recalls his pilot training in memoir. No doubt The Barry Island Murders will be too sedate for some. Williams of the yard is no Jack Reacher with his chiselled chin and perfect teeth. No guns, bombs and few girls to excite the reader, just three deftly recounted tales with a gentle humour running through them like a vein in a good cheese.
~ Books, Reviews and bookish thoughts
Witty, offbeat, funny, quirky but most of all a great and fun read. May 17, Christoph Fischer rated it it was amazing. Told in retrospect by Detective Williams we are taken into the world of the Welsh s, where investigations were not done by CDI teams and DNA but in this case with luck, wit and common sense. The cases involve a dead body in the fun faire ride Journey to Mars, bodies on playgrounds and graveyards. The author makes a point about real murder cases and investigations, where not everything is known to the investigators, not every stone is turned and not all questions will be answered.
Under those premises the focus shifts from brilliant clue leaving and confusing the audience to painting a beautiful picture of the times, sentiment, nostalgia and quirky humour tell of the times gone. The novel might not earn its five stars for genius in crime solving but it deserves it for originality, quality of entertainment and a great main characters.
The Welsh connection for me might have something to do with my personal enjoyment but I recommend you give this a try. Mar 07, Seumas Gallacher rated it it was amazing. Another masterly and highly-entertaining offering from Andrew Peters Andrew Peters presents his crime stories in a uniquely engaging style. There is humour leaping from every page, but let that not detract from the intelligent yarn-spinning that holds you from start to finish.
The Barry Island Murders
The three short stories are about serious business Apr 07, Kay Robinson rated it it was amazing. A change from the usual location, and in the style of humour, but only slightly. A great monologue that keeps bringing on the chuckles and paints such a vivid picture of a character I'm sure most readers have met. Jan 31, Kay Smillie rated it it was amazing.
Short but sweet with many genuine laugh out loud moments. Almost makes me want to visit Barry Island, albeit with a time machine to take me back to the s. Not suitable for the PC brigade. Memories Of along ago a stab in the heart of surviving a lost youth which like murder cannot be forgot till told to someone see. Barry centred crime Knew Barry Island in this period and it is an accurate rendition of a small Welsh seaside town in the 70s. Unusual narrative style and, ultimately, self deprecating, but a pleasant couple of hours, if only because of the memories of Barry and its railway graveyard.
Jan 13, Richie Earl rated it it was amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed this great little book, which takes the form of an interview with a retired police Chief Superintendent, reminiscing about three of his old cases. It is extremely well written with some neat plot twists and a liberal sprinkling of humour. As always, Andrew Peters doesn't fail to deliver an entertaining read.
Feb 09, Rosie Claverton rated it really liked it Shelves: Light-hearted murder shorts in first person alcoholic, with a strong sense of location and narrative style. This compelling character really immerses the reader in his world. Tell us about the artist.
I have full control over what I want on my covers, and I think they are the best in the world. They are designed by a mysterious figure who goes by the name of Joe Lumley, though I am told he is in fact the rightful heir to the Russian throne. Or a Peruvian hit-man. They all think they can sing, just like you all think you can write. You have to be able to tell very good stories and use language really well. The Blues Detective http: In this book the protagonist Jeremy Higgins is a writer of a series of crime fiction with a title character named Joe Soap after his excessive love for washing and showers.

Higgins gets blackmailed into assassinating what seems random victims without any connection to himself. As the assignments for new killings keep coming in we — and Jeremy — are none the wiser why they are happening, until more complex connections are revealed.
Apart from some scenes in the middle that I would have liked to be tighter or faster I found this story very well written crime fiction but on a personal level I missed the quirky humour Peters is so famous for. This is a bit darker than usual but very good.
