Rugged character actor Charles Napier reveals highlights and lowpoints of his long, interesting career in this quick read. Great anecdotes but wish there had been more depth and that the timeline didn't jump around so much.
Still, a very worthy book.

One person found this helpful. This book was very entertaining but short. It kind of read like one long story he told to someone else in one sitting. This guy has had some cool experiences. I always loved his acting and it was great to get to know him a little better. I'm a movie fan and have always welcomed the presence of character actor Charles Napier in any film. Consequentially I more than pleased when I stumbled upon this book.
In terms of format it consists many short chapters, typically two or three pages, on individual subjects, principally specific films, roles or other personalities. The tone of the writing is conversational and you can imagine the co-author sitting around with Napier and prompting stories So what was it like making Blues Brothers? As a result the book reads quickly, I got through it in an hour and a half. Charles Napier comes across as friendly, engaging, intelligent and generous with his fellow performers. I have some reservations about wholeheartedly recommending the book inasmuch as it is unlikely to satisfy some readers.
When a sudden reference to an "ex" appears I was reminded that, while there are some interesting chapters on his early life, there are obviously many personal details omitted. Similarly the continous reference to people as "drinking buddies" did make me wonder if there was a darker element which was omitted.
People looking for more detailed information, such as those with a cult interest in Russ Meyer, will likely be disappointed in the lack or depth of information. I don't degrudge the money for the book or the time spent reading. However the book is what it is and fans will enjoy it but serious film students may find it less substantive.
Ok, I'll give a review. I loved Charles Napier. Charles was the only one I didn't get, alas. It's not grand writing but it sure is interesting. Charles just tells it like it was in a real conversational style. He tells of the trials and tribulations, highs and lows, of being a working actor.
There are tons of drinking stories and adventures. Has some great stories of being represented by an agent who handled "the ugly guys" -- James Coburn, Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson. Has great stories of working with and being friends with Russ Meyer. Talks about his early screen time on Star Trek, how he got that role, wrote music for it, how it really started him out, and how he has never escaped it's influence.
An interesting and really funny story about ending up being the spokesperson for Texas Instruments because the advertising people couldn't deal with these rough, unsophisticated guys from Texas. Napier even ended up being the moderator between the TI guys and the ad agency. He wasn't Olivier but he knew that. He knew that people hired him because they knew what they were going to get and wanted him.
I got what I wanted with the book too. Decades ago when I started reading biographies and autobiographies of movie and TV actors, these books usually provided a thorough look at the lives and careers of their subjects. In more recent years, these books have changed in nature. If, like me, you were hoping to learn more about Napier himself, you might be a little disappointed. The book is rather skimpy at pages. Loved ones are mentioned briefly in passing only if they play a role in an anecdote.
Some of his credits are mentioned briefly or not at all. For example, I was hoping for a few pages of his memories of working on The Rockford Files, but he merely mentions it in a list of TV shows he appeared on. See all 7 reviews.
