Each Pat Montella book is a stronger, more enjoyable read than the last, and I look forward to the next in the series. This is the latest book about these interesting characters. I enjoy how the author interweaves the present with the past. I love the Pat Montella series, and this one gives you the opportunity to get more of a background on the herione. Have you ever been intrigued by old houses, the lure of secret passageways, the wonder of hidden rooms?

If you have and who of us hasn't this book is for you. Once again, we spend what seems far too short a time with her charming and genuine characters--Who could be more entertaining and fun than a gaggle of Pat Montella's relatives? I never tire of these characters and am always sorry when one of Santangelo's stories comes to an end.

Another great installment in this wonderful series. Keep them coming, Elena Santangelo! One person found this helpful. A continuation of the series with the great character - Pat Montella - and her older friend. The return to her old home town causes all sorts of things to happen and the depiction of the town, and the characters both seen and unseen put you right there and make it real and happening before your own eyes. I loved sitting down to dinner with that Italian family. I loved going back in time and seeing the depression and how it affected people. The ending was satisfying as always, but I hated to leave the characters.

I'm eagerly waiting for the next one. Santangelo has created a compelling heroine in Pat Montella. In this book, the fourth in the series, Pat returns to her native Norristown, PA near Philadelphia with Miss Maggie for a family funeral. While there, she copes with the numerous Italian-American family members that either want to lay their woes on her or feed her; she works on solving a family mystery from the Depression; and she solves a murder plot.

The author combines light paranormal and different time periods very successfully in this page-turner. Pat's mother's spirit is trying to tell Pat something and the solving of that "message" makes for a real page-turner. The surprise ending blew me away - I never saw it coming!

It had history, it was set in the South and it went from present times to the Civil War era. For a first book, I thought it was very well done. Most of the chapters were two part, one set in modern times and one that was the history part or what the ghost wanted you to know. There were a couple of surprises in this book and when you discover them, you almost want to go back and start over again to see how you could have missed this.

At first I didn't think it tied together, but you have to keep reading to see how it all works out. There is a little romance, but nothing that overpowers the mystery.

Robert E Lee even makes an appearance. I am giving this 5 out of 5 stars and can't wait to find the next one to see what ghost visits Pat the next time. Once Pat walks on the land, she begins to "hear" and "see" the past through an ancestor's experiences. Pat is charmed by the owner of Bell Run, befriends a young teenager and becomes infatuated with an estate lawyer. But someone wants her to leave As her personal danger increases, Pat refuses to leave because she is increasingly drawn to learning her ancestor's long-ago fate.

At first I considered the story overly concerned with Civil War troop-movement minutiae that only a dedicated CW buff would love, but I continued reading because I enjoy the style of alternating chapters from the past with the present. The first plot twist past the halfway point caught my attention, then I never put the book down until I finished it. The story blends elements of romance novels, historical fiction, mysteries, time-travel, feminism, and family drama.

I feel the most effective part of the novel is when reading her ancestors' letters of Civil War events draws Pat into discovering what really happened to her family in the distant past.
