The music was playing, and people were dreaming their dreams again. That is why we fight. But does not the doctrine of just war limit us in our crusade against evil?

Mises Review

Not at all, our author replies. Just war theory teaches us to fight in order to avert future evil. There is the little matter of the criterion of last resort, which requires us to seek a peaceful resolution of a dispute before using force, but this does not faze Bennett. He omits to mention it altogether.

Relativists and other anti-Americans attempt to subvert our judgments of good and evil, but fortunately Bennett, a trained philosopher, is here to help us make discriminating judgments. Here is an example.

Ashbrook For…

Saddam Hussein's "monstrous tyranny has been surpassed by only a few other dictators, all of them rightly reviled in the judgment of history. Saddam Hussein invaded Iran, invaded Kuwait, attempted to assassinate a former U. But I must be careful. Critics of Bennett's rather unsubtle judgments risk verbal assault themselves. He deems Stanley Fish a relativist. As such, he holds the same position as the murderer Charles Manson.

Bennett quotes a remark by Manson and says: Fish maintained "that we should abandon any 'hope of justifying our response to the attacks in universal terms that would be persuasive to everyone, including our enemies.

Austrian School

Fish claims that we should adhere to the moral views we have, not, as a relativist would, that we should regard our own views as but one of many equally valid positions. Fish rejects neutrality, not truth. But, even if I am wrong, is it not strange to think that Fish's view puts him on the same level doctrinally as a notorious killer? We must, if Bennett is right, strike against evil when we find it. A problem arises, if we wish to follow his path. How are we to identify evil, if Bennett has not spoken to the situation we confront?

And even if he has, how can we see for ourselves the basis of his judgments, without having to depend on his authority? This font of kindness stands ready to help. We must not be guided by dispassionate reason: To the contrary, as the ancients recognized, anger is a necessary power of the soul, intimately connected with the passion for justice. But I must not proceed further with this thought, lest I expose myself as a Mansonite.

WHY WE FIGHT: Moral Clarity and the War on Terrorism

We also cannot lose sight of the fact that Islam is not just a religion but also a political system whose major tenet is that of converting the world to its religion, and submitting it to its political control. That, above all else, has been behind Muslim agression for years, and the "excuse of the week" Israel, our presence in the Gulf, etc.

Read this book and bring yourself back to reality. Despite such a major loss of life on its own soil, some were railing against U. Bennett challenges the pacifists, unable to distinguish wars of agression and wars of defense, the ridiculous claims that the War on Terrorism is somehow a "racist," and the need for educators and society as a whole to embrace patriotism as a virtue, not something of which to be ashamed.

Bennett may have his critics, and "Why We Fight" is not without its faults, but it is refreshing to hear a voice discussing morals and righteous anger in the midst of the s soft relativism that still pollutes the air. Excellent with a lot of historical facts that people have forgotten. Index is excellent for you to find the stuff you want to get to real fast. My book is highlighted. Helps you to understand America and us. This book is about so much more that a war in Iraq or Afghanistan.

It addresses the heart of the breakdown of order in America and around the world. It is a "must read". This short book is not one of Mr. It is a somewhat hastily prepared propaganda effort to justify the current war on terrorism. Christians are being enlisted in the "just war" by taking scripture out of context and to stoke hate against the radical Muslim world. Furthermore the "Judeo-Christian tradition," a term which even observant Jews reject, is invoked to obtain unlimited support for the Likud government in what is, if we are honest with each other, a colonial war.

Bennett assures us "with an understanding, almost relgious in nature, that to our two nations [U. This can only increase the hatred of the Arab world against us and bring more rather than less terrorism to our soil. Instead of waging a "just war" Jesus would have wanted us to work towards a "just peace.

Bennett presents a well-crafted commentary on the validation for action. Bennett's presentation was skillfully prepared and supported by facts and examples.

Its logic was flawless. The conclusion of this composition is that America was not only justified in taking military action, but all Americans were obligated to fight back.

Why We Fight: Moral Clarity and the War on Terrorism - AshbrookAshbrook

No honest person can argue that we have not been at war for decades, with a third world menagerie that has all too often demonstrated their hatred for the United States i. To say otherwise is to completely ignore the facts, and facts are usually ignored by those who would claim that Americans are to blame for the bombing these are the same people that claim Americans need to apologize for this country's prosperity.

America can only be blamed for waiting so long to forcefully respond. Bennett's presentation could have been his turn in a moderated debate on the necessity for long overdue American force. As such, he would have shut out his opposition, provided points were awarded for logic and not emotion.

See a Problem?

That Bennett could state his case, without resorting to heartrending outcries, should be an example for those that disagree with his position. Perhaps they, too, should examine the facts, and not blindly fuse themselves to a faulted political agenda.

Those who have actually read the "whole book," and still disagree with the need for a military response fit one of several casts: They are intentionally ignorant, or 2. See all 60 reviews.
