Believing it will come back without reason is entirely faith based. Trends in music tend to be cyclical and reactionary. This is the third time in my life that hip hop has been on top, and the third time that it has become ultra sanitized and "radio-friendly". Twice previously the reaction was some sort of rock-based music coming in and taking over. The difference now is that the platforms have changed, the reactions are much less focused and markets much more so.
The industry still doesn't know what it's doing, everyone is just throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks. Personally I don't think anything will make any kind of "comeback", not in the sense that we're familiar with. Kids' tastes are ultra fickle, there's too much out there available to them and they have no idea how to navigate it, they like things simply because they're exposed to it.
A lot of my students like rock music in one form or another, all it takes is enough of them spreading it around to their friends, they get a bit older, start bands, go to concerts I agree I hope for the revival to come! I have a fellow friend and musician who worked a juicy j concert recently and he and I both are young rock and rollers born and raised, but he got discouraged last night called me and said rock is dead and it bummed us out but I always wanna deny it ya know.
It's dead in the sense of being a profitable style of music in the mainstream consciousness. A rock band hasn't "made it big" in years and the surviving ones have adapted to pop. You just have to know where to look, it's not dead by any means its just not what's popular on the top 40s right now. Metal has never really been a top 40 genre but it's not going anywhere, people who like a certain genre know where to look, listen and read about it.
Lot of genres are not necessarily popular and mainstream but still going. Plenty of new rock bands around. Rock isn't dead, its just not mainstream anymore. It could always make a comeback someday though. Rock is dead they say. Most of the top grossing tours last year were rock bands. Bands like Queens of the Stone Age are still consistently excellent and bands like Royal Blood and Rival Suns are putting out good music.
Not sure why this narrative keeps going. I swear this question gets posted here once a week. Some good new bands out there, just harder to find. Check out Highly Suspect.
