Tori headed off in that direction and we were treated to a pod of false killer whales. Each of the crew launched into an explanation of how rare these mammals are becoming and explained how important it is to document as many of them as possible by the distinctive dorsal fin each animal has. Several of them swam just ahead of the bow, along side of our boat, and we even got to see one of them jump out of the water!!
It was truly humbling to be part of this effort to document these creatures and to witness the love and respect that the crew has for them. Tori then took us to a large cove where several other boats had congregated. There were several pods of spinner dolphins present. After seeing how many passengers where on the other boats, we realized how fortunate we were to have three crew to the six of us.
We easily spent an hour swimming with these dolphins. They put on quite an acrobatic display demonstrating why they are called "spinner" dolphins. My wife is not an adept swimmer, so Mallory stayed by her side the whole time she was in the water to help her get the best experience possible. We both really appreciate this personal attention which she received. She probably would not have received this level of service if we had been on one of the other boats.
This was our first trip to Hawaii. Wild Side Specialty Tours was recommended to us by some friends who used to live here. I am ever so glad that we took their advice. Without a doubt, we will be repeat customers! First off, definitely book the Best of the West tour! At the marina where we met, multiple other tours were also leaving at the same time, but their boats were filled with a zillion people.
Our experience with only 6 passengers total and 3 crew members was so much more personal than what one would get on a large tour. Capt Tori and the deckhands Mallory and Nick taught us so much throughout the day and you could tell that they really wanted us to have a memorable experience while also broadening our scope of wildlife knowledge.

Almost immediately after leaving the dock, we found multiple pods of bottlenose dolphins, which are very uncommon to see! We hustled with our gear and jumped in the water and were able to observe the dolphins right below us. Mainly, this tour is about finding a pod and basically following them around without really interfering with their daily activities. Later, spotted and spinner dolphins made quite a few appearances and they enjoyed following our boat and jumping in the wakes.

The tour is very casual and go with the flow, which I loved. There's no set schedule of locations so we were able to make the most of our trip by following pods around or letting them come to us. We did make a quick stop a small reef where sea turtles get "groomed" by fish which was an awesome experience! We didn't spend much time there due to a time constraint by the other passengers, but Mallory made sure we stopped there at least for a quick swim when I told her how much we love turtles: All in all, the day was amazing.
The weather was perfect, the wildlife was plentiful, and the crew was so knowledgeable. I can see us doing this again during a future visit. We booked this tour as I am a bit conscious about the whole interfering with an animals natural environment idea. I wanted to see these animals in the wild without causing them any stress etc. We spent most of the tour following false killer whales whilst Nick and Elizabeth tried to photograph and video them. This was amazing to see and the crew obviously knew a lot about these animals and their behaviour.

However their presence meant no dolphins. We're we're offered the choice between trying to find some or going snorkelling. We chose snorkelling because we didn't want to go through all of this and not even leave the boat. We saw some turtles, fish and baby fish which were cute. The crew were professional and Elizabeth was friendly and helpful. We are so grateful for your being onboard that day, that you cared about the wildlife, and all were so helpful with pointing out where the individual whales were to photograph etc.
The Hawaiian false killer whale is the most endangered whale in Hawaii. It was a banner day to see them, our 1 target species in research efforts. We began our tours as a side leg of such, and continue to collect much needed data while onboard. With less than of these whales left in the world, the photos and video that you helped collect while they transited through the area socializing, feeding and hunting it WAS amazing! I do see where you coming from though. They were heading right towards the area where the spinner dolphins were that we were planning to get in the water with , which seemed to be in our favor.
But being a fearsome top ocean predator, as the false killer whales approached much closer than we had anticipated , the dolphins scattered! We couldn't find the dolphins after. We also missed a whale shark, in the area! We did give a choice at that time to keep looking for the spinner dolphins which if found would probably still be running from their bigger cousins, not an ideal 'swim with' , look for some other dolphin pod,, or move on to snorkeling.
Given the proximity of these top ocean predators, we did also feel that snorkeling the reefs were a good 'given'. We knew for sure the reef and it's fish and turtles would be as planned Thank you again for being with us and being so wiling to help, you directly contributed much more than you are aware - right in line with your views on 'no harm'. Sadly, yesterday one of the whales that we were with that day stranded dead on the Big Island. We obtained some of the last known data on that whale - you were one of the last people to see that whale alive and healthy, and maybe, in much too short of a time, to see these whales ever.

In the s, Connor and his colleagues were the first to document male bottlenose dolphins aggressively "herding" fertile females in Australia's Shark Bay. The females frequently "bolted", but only managed to escape the males once in every four attempts. The males do this by rushing at her.
