Ellis and Robinson make a great team as authors although it's pretty evident most , if not all, of the writing here was Ellis's. In typical Chess Team fashion, this final book is fast and has enough action to keep even the most apathetic readers at least marginally entertained. I think this was the best so far. While King is capturing Brainstorm, Sara and Fiona get caught when a black hole is created inside the museum.
This story moves along very swiftly. It is engaging and the characters are familiar friends from previous stories. I highly recommend reading this short story. Listened to the Audible version this time around, and what a great thrill ride it was. But this time, it's in danger of being superseded by an even more dangerous and ancient evil!! It also brings back Hercules Alexander Diotrephes and we are once again wondering where his loyalties lie. Jul 13, Julie Carter rated it it was amazing. I am enjoying the Callsign series, and like the insight that it gives us into the Chess Team members. With this installment in the Callsign: King series, Brainstorm is back with a vengeance.
Also back for this story is Hercules, better known as Alexander Diotrophes. The ongoing distrust between him and King make for an intense story that I didn't want to put down. Fiona had a large part in the story, and I like learning more about her each time she is involved. Now off to find some more Callsign I am enjoying the Callsign series, and like the insight that it gives us into the Chess Team members. Now off to find some more Callsign books to read! The last volume of this novella series is simply awesome. I had trouble sleeping because I couldn't stop reading. Fortunately I forced my self to read it for longer, just for the pure pleasure of enjoying an extremely creative techno-thriller.
One of the best in the Callsign series. Jeremy Robinson never ceases to surprise us with his gripping, fast-paced and exciting creative writing. He is the best writer that can pursue the excellence found in Michael Crichton. Queen requires a ton of suspension of disbelief. I don't want to get into the whole plot and main ideas of this novella, but mixing a secret genetics lab under the ruins of Chernobyl without really giving a very strong reason for really anything that happens in this story, bring the star rating down from a 4 to 3.
On the plus side though, it, along with the other 6 short stories in this series, is entertaining, fairly well written, and does a good job filling in the gaps between the bookend novels of Threshold and Ragnarok. Feb 14, Jamey Goodyear rated it it was amazing. Queen is on her way to find Rook, who has disappeared after their last assignment, Deep Blue detours her to Pripyat, a deserted city on the outskirts of Chernobyl. Evidence has been found that Manifold Genetics has a secret lab there. Her mission is to confirm the existence of the lab.

Queen and the girl are chased by the security team, who Queen decimates. While trying to find an entrance to the lab that she now knows is there, she gets to play on some rides at the amusement park. However, these rides have been modified and more of the monsters come out to attack her. Queen is a petite, young gal. Her background has made her tough.
She is smart, strong, agile, and she knows how to fight. This fast paced story held my attention. Being a gal, I found Queen to be just a bit unbelievable. However, I could identify with her and escape into the story because I believe that all women would like to be strong. This is a good book with a strong female lead character. A quick read for those who read other stories based on secret ops team saving the world from mad scientist.
I recommend this short story. Mar 07, Angela rated it it was amazing Shelves: Get to know Queen in this fun and thrilling Callsign book! She is an extraordinary woman with such killer fighting abilities and a past of unfortunate events that have given her character more depth and intense anger. In this story, Queen is up against some terrifying creatures in Russia with very low odds of surviving. The Callsingn series is hands down one of my very favorites and completely absorbs my world when I am immersed in pages of pure action, thrills, horrors, monsters, creatures and pure creepiness.
I love getting to know each team member intimately in these high explosive reading delights. Queen" will add to your reading experience in ways you have never imagined. Due to attention grabbing and imaginative writing, with intriguing secrets and frightful "I need to look under my bed and check my closets before bed time", scenes, I sincerely recommend this book. Queen is extremely lethal and a "no holds bar" kinda girl, which works to her advantage since her enemies always think she's a weak link since she's a girl. She is a character I would not want to meet in a dark alley that's for sure. She does bring that extra spunk to the team since she is the only girl. This novel happened to be very short. I was looking for more and think there could have been more information with the exposing of the Manifold facility.
We did get to see more vulnerable side of Queen in this mission. I wonder if Robinson will take that issue to another level or just ignore it ever happened. Feb 11, Greg Destro rated it really liked it. I find it interesting that Mr. Robinson is a fan of James Rollins, who is one of my favorite authors, as this Novella definitely mirrors many of the aspects of Rollins' stories and characters.
While I did find it enjoyable and a fast read, the author's penchant for more brutal violence, which is also quite graphically described, was somewhat of a turn off, and a little more than I needed or wanted. The story was interesting, but also somewhat more unbelievable than Rollins' tales, so while I woul I find it interesting that Mr. Feb 25, Lianne Burwell rated it liked it Shelves: I have to say, this is one of the great things about epublishing; if you like a series, the author may be writing short stories or novellas in the same universe for ebook.
In this case, Jeremy Robinson has used a number of co-writers to do individual stories about the members of the Chess Team in his Jack Sigler series. I did have a few quibbles, though. There was a character that appeared, gets captured, and we never really find out their fate. And the death of another characters was very disappointing after their setup. Queen was worth the money.

The only other one of the Chess Team Novellas I've read up until now was the first volume of Deep Blue, and I honestly don't remember much of what happened probably because it was like a year and a half ago!

The books can be a bit formulaic, but I read this as part 1 in the ebook set mentioned by other reviewers. The books can be a bit formulaic, but they work and they aren't ashamed of the craziness that goes on. This particular novella series follows the adventures of Jack Sigler, part of the deep black Chess Team. They do your dirty work so you don't have to, but they do so with morals and a good sense of camraderie.
He also loves his girlfriend, Sara, and his kind-of-but-not-really adoptive daughter, Fiona. He's a good dude. The action starts here when Sara, who works for the CDC, gets called to Ethiopia on a verrrry shady-sounding mission. She texts Jack, in code good girl! There's some science-y sounding stuff in here, some woo-woo mystical stuff not too bad , and a lot of spent cartridges.
We also have the myth of a supercomputer along the lines of HAL, but here on Earth, which is about times worse than in space. It was pretty competently done, although I have a niggling feeling that the copyeditor quit right before the end of the book, because these really bizarre grammatical errors kept popping up. It wasn't horrific, though, but it was noticeable. Like a popcorn movie in book form.

One thing I found out quickly is that there are a few spoilers for book three of the series, but nothing that would ruin reading that book when I get it, and you don't have to have read all three books before reading this novella, although I would recommend at least reading up to book two, since one of the main characters was introduced in that volume.
Jack Sigler, code-named King in the Chess Team, gets a cryptic text from his girlfriend the above mentioned character , a scientist with the CDC who has been sent to Africa, and the message hints she could use some back-up. He quickly follows, getting there just as she attacked at a hospital and is rescued by unknown forces.
This leads to a mysterious elephant graveyard, what might be a civilization-threatening virus, and a villain that pushed my credulity until I got to literally the last page of the story.

That last page really perked me up and made me look forward to Callsign Queen, the next book in the six parts. In some ways it is a very standard thriller, much like the novels, with a slightly bizarre twist, but they are fun reads. I will be buying the entire series as it becomes available on Smashwords. It's whetting the appetite for the next full length novel! The second time through for this book, except this time via audiobook. The story was great as previously mentioned, but I need to add that the narration was fantastic. Jeffrey Kafer did a great job, spoke at the perfect pace I can't stand it when they talk too slow , and he kept the different voices to a minimum. I'm not usually a big fan o Originally read in June I'm not usually a big fan of audiobooks because I feel the story loses momentum when you have a male narrator pretending to be a woman, and vice versa.
Kafer does is lower his voice an octave or two to speak the female parts, and it doesn't distract you from the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook and will be continuing with the others in the series. Feb 06, Dustin rated it it was amazing. Callsign King Book 1 is a nice little episode featuring King from Jeremy Robinson's Chess Team books, first in a series of novellas following the previous books-Prime, Pulse, Instinct, and Threshold, in that order. King runs into new and old friends and enemies and takes on a global threat, all in a novella! This was a fun run, and now I need to read the next one, Callsign Queen!
As you are reading it you can definitely tell it was not written entirely by Jeremy Robinson. In fact, my guess is that all the novellas are primarily written by the co-author and Jeremy does some tweaking and editing to keep things consistent with the Chess Team universe. That being said, it was still a very well written and interesting story. Longer than I expected and quite a few twists and turns for a novella.
If you are a fan of the Chess Team it is definitely worth your time. At pages this was pretty short fast paced kinda read. The problem I had with this was partly because of the info dumping that my tired brain couldn't handle and partly because I felt that putting the proper names of each and every piece of weaponry was a bit too on the nose. Apart from that while I have read the full length novels of the Chess team it was ages ago and I don't remember much about those books. So reading this was meant to be something of a re introduction to the characters and the story line. The problem is the characters aren't particularly fleshed out and Sigler comes off a bit too unbelievable. It was just alright for me. Feb 07, John rated it liked it.
