Summary "This book traces the development of the author's consciousness as a black male pro-feminist professor. Lemons explores the meaning of black male feminism by examining his experiences at the New York City college where he taught for more than a decade - a small, private, liberal arts college where the majority of the students were white and female. Through a series of classroom case studies, he presents the transformative power of memoir writing as a strategic tool for enabling students to understand the critical relationship between the personal and the political.
From the insightful inclusion of his own personal narratives about his childhood experience of domestic violence, to stories about being a student and teacher in majority white classrooms for most of his life, Lemons takes the leader on a provocative journey about what it means to be black, male, and pro-feminist. Lemons is a fierce advocate for not merely embracing feminism, but incorporating it, living it. Because he writes from a black feminist perspective, the essays feel utterly relevant, esp to those of us who live what DuBois referred to as "a double consciousness. Not only did it require movement beyond accepted boundaries, but excitement could not be generated without full recognition of the fact that there could never be an absolute set agenda governing teaching practices. Lemons's own experiences as a professor and writer effectively underscore the connectivity between scholarly life and activism.
As a self-acclaimed black male "pro-feminist" professor, Lemons pays homage to and is inspired by the work of other pioneering black [End Page ] feminists as well, including Audre Lorde and Alice Walker. As he insists throughout his narrative, the works of such women have rendered and substantiated the subjectivity and perspectives of black women as central to conceptualizing and ideally resisting racism, sexism, and homophobia, for instance. Yet Lemons also credits black males who have demonstrated a commitment to black feminism and find it central to collective liberationist, post-colonial goals for having motivated the development of his consciousness as a pro-feminist.

Such figures include Frederick Douglass, W. Du Bois, and Calvin Hernton. In addition, Lemons acknowledges the various ways in which his role as a feminist has been impacted by his having served predominantly white college campus communities throughout his career. In the preface of his book he writes:. Over the course of thirteen years of teaching at a small, private college in New York City's historic Greenwich Village, I developed an antiracist pedagogy founded upon black feminist thought.
