The Development of Ethics - Hardcover - Terence Irwin - Oxford University Press

Professor Irwin has provided us with a masterful account of the development of moral philosophy in the West. His study is especially valuable because he is one of the few philosophers with a genuine sympathy for and a perhaps unrivalled understanding of Aristotelian philosophy. This makes him the ideal judge of the debate between ancient and modern philosophy.

The author of this review is a student of the moral philosophy of Hugo Grotius, with a great interest in Aquinas, Suarez and Pufendorf.

While I cannot judge about all the section of this massive work, I can assure the potential reader that he or she will find in Irwin a careful student of these authors, always concerned to expound their argument in the best light and then to critically examine it. The length of the work should not have a deterring effect: It also allows Irwin to show that attention to detail is important: If there is one criticism that one could make it is this: The good or end of doing good to others includes the virtue of justice.

And this virtue can be further specified by the demands not to harm others, to respect their life, bodily integrity etc. Justice is also a collective good: Including a brief discussion of these topics would have made the argument more easily accessible.

One should add that Irwin necessarily had to restrict himself to the essentials, given the enormous task he had to accomplish. I have only had a fleeing look at volume III.

The Development of Ethics: Volume 2: From Suarez to Rousseau

I think here the discussion of Elisabeth Anscombe's Modern Moral Philosophy already touched on in vol. II and of John Rawls will be of particular interest to the reader who is genuinely concerned to make up his or her own mind about the merits of Aristotelian ethics. Irwin has done much to help rehabilitating the Aristotelian approach to ethics as a part of practical philosophy.

His work is also a powerful proof that the best way of doing moral philosophy is to study its historical development, a lesson which meta-ethicists and analytical philosophers will be greatly helped to learn thanks to Irwin.
