Most helpful customer reviews on Amazon. This was a great story! A supernatural western with lots of action. Hubbard's story was first published in at a time when westerns were commonplace. Will Murray of Doc Savage fame notes on the back cover blurb that supernatural westerns were rare. Hubbard's westerns were especially popular and this one was no exception.

This reprint from Galaxy Press is the sixth western from the pulp era. Ron Hubbard's classic pulp westerns! This is a nice example of pulp fiction from this era. Definitely worth reading from a historical perspective. Saturday, July 26, is the official National Day of the Cowboy, which is an official holiday in 8 states.

To celebrate the holiday, I'm reviewing several western titles by the late L.

The audiobooks are produced by Galaxy Press using a talented voice cast and outstanding sound effects. These stories were published in the s and s, or otherwise known as the Golden Age, in Pulp magazines. The Gunner form Gehenna centers on Bill Maynard, a former criminal turned lawman, who gets an unwelcome visit from his riding buddy, Gunner. Bill is forced to go on one last ride with Gunner to steal some gold from a few miners, but Bill is a good guy now and he'll do anything he can to stop Gunner. With only three days left on the job, Brazos will have his hands full stopping some bad guys from robbing the bank, which is holding a supply of gold. Wild West fiction seems to be a dying breed, though there are a few writers still publishing paperbacks in the genre. Ron Hubbard wrote several western short stories and novellas during the s and s, the majority of them appearing in Pulp magazines that no longer exist.

It is great that Galaxy Press is bring the stories back by releasing paperbacks and producing high-quality audiobooks. Shadows from Boot Hill is a western tale that would be perfect for an episode of The Twilight Zone, as it has a supernatural twist. The other two stories are the traditional good guy vs.

Overall, the three stories featured on the audiobook are well written with a great voice-cast and outstanding sound effects.

Shadows from Boot Hill by L Ron Hubbard

All opinions are my own. This story is unlike any other western, as it has a supernatural-like twist to it. This alone sets it apart from any typical old west tale. Having unexpected characters, such as the witch doctor, made it extremely exciting for my kids, as well as for my husband and myself. Originally published in the issue of "Wild West Weekly", this pulp fiction tells the story of a man named Brazos, your typical outlaw.

But Brazos is unable to collect, as the law is hot on his trail and has to skip town quickly.

The Cowboy - Short Film (4K)

Unfortunately, Brant partners up with a witch doctor in New Orleans, which forces Brazos to have to kill not just Brant, but the witch doctor too. Right before the witch doctor is dead, he puts a curse on Brazos. But with Brazos not believing in those types of superstitions, he thinks nothing of it.

This collection of books was a lot of fun. I think growing up and trying to survive as a pioneer on the frontier was more challenging than any of the western movies or TV show can share. These stories however put you right into the period and while the struggle to survive hits hot, so does the humor, and the never say die of these early heroes. Shadows from Boot Hill is not what I expected. It is an eerie twist on a Western Classic. The outlaw who you despise right off the bat kills a man, and is cursed with a second shadow. The story takes you down a road into black magic and you can't help but wonder how these type of characters must have plagued the early settlers.

King of the Gunman shows the hard life of trying to survive in a country where the "law" was often in the hands of the fastest gunman, and those people who tried to live with integrity and those who tried trying. Magic Quirt is just pure fun. It is amazing how not only in the old west, but even today, if you "believe" something to be true, it really does come true for you. This story captures the essence of a rugged character who is endlessly low on luck, that turns a good dead for others and things turn around for himself.

This wild wild west story, gets wilder as he starts to push his luck. Ron Hubbard really excels in this one. During a time when the wild wild west was still being driven by men with guns, and there was a civilizing influence in the East that made men "want" to solve problems without a gun So when these worlds collided it made for a crazy dilemma of how to keeps one's integrity and one's life. These are great, fun stories! I've always liked the western genre and Hubbard really knew how to write them. Lots of suspense, the action and setting are very visual -- he puts you right into the story and the action and it picks you up and you move throughout the story like you're there.

I highly recommend either Kindle or the paperback PLUS the audio book version to listen along as you read. They are incredibly well-produced and full theatrical performances along with sound effects and musical scores. I'm from the mid-west and I love the out-of-doors so these stories transported me back to my home environment and a waaaay before my time! I learned so much about out door life, adventures of times when Colt was law and land-grabbing was a way of life or death.

I read the paper backs and listen to the audio books over and over. I admire my leather-bound copies love those hides! I have them all and wish there were more. These stories are written in a style that is not only really enjoyable but takes one back to the days when the good and bad guys are clearly defined and there is always a message that, if leaned, can lead one to a happier life.
