Historically, it fed and sustained Native Americans and European explorers, presidents, and enslaved African Americans, inspiring folk songs, poetry, and scores of place names from Georgia to Illinois. So why have so few people heard of the pawpaw, much less tasted one? Sponsored Products are advertisements for products sold by merchants on Amazon. Hoping to shed more light on this culinary mystery, as well as inspire consumers and growers to make the fruit popular again, first-time author and gardener Moore offers both an engaging history and a thorough cultivation guide to the pawpaw. According to Moore, the shrub-like, large-leafed pawpaw tree typically grows in clumps near river bottoms along a belt running from northern Missouri to southern Louisiana and east as far as the Atlantic Ocean.

Although historically pawpaw was eaten by Native Americans and slaves, it probably owes its marketplace anonymity to a short shelf life and widely variable flavors. But, then again, in his pursuit of the lowly American pawpaw, Andrew Moore reminds us that America was once considered an exotic destiny on its own, and has always had more than its fair share of culinary rarities. On the Trail of an Underground America. Andrew Moore takes us on a very personal journey investigating how and why North America's largest indigenous fruit largely disappeared, and documenting efforts to revive it.

Prepare to be overwhelmed with longing for the sweet scent and taste of the pawpaw. Uncommon, yes, but who would have imagined that there were and are quite a few other pawpaw nuts out there? A writer and gardener, he now lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

If you're curious about the largest edible fruit native to the United States, Andrew Moore's "Pawpaw: In Search of America's Forgotten Fruit" might be the place to go. The author relates an enormous body of interesting information about the pawpaw, and he writes well. For this I give the book 5 stars. In addition to educating the reader about pawpaws, the author educates us about his personal expeditions in search of specific pawpaw trees or fruit or persons somehow associated with pawpaws, and the tales pall. Minus one half star.

The litany of names of persons associated with pawpaws, no matter how tangential to the greater theme, and descriptions of their clothing and facial features reminded me of sitting in a coffee house listening to the endless wails of the evening's folk singer when eventually every song sounds like the last. Minus one and half stars.

Great book on Pawpaw - the only book still in print on the subject that I could find. My brother sent me some pawpaw fruit to try last year and we all enjoyed it so much I wanted to learn more about this Native American fruit. Well everything you ever wanted to know about Pawpaw is in this book.

When Joe retired from his job of 25 years in electronics he knew that this was right time to make them into the style of a published journal.

Upcoming Events

Joe saw that writing the stories as a journal allowed him to tell many details that most authors miss. The reader gets the opportunity to see the details from an eyewitness perspective. You feel like you are part of the action and the story. This was the start of the Texas Republic series. The first Texas Republic book is being edited into two new books with more stories.

It is now broken into chapters since it is originally written in the form of a pioneer diary. Joe worked as a substitute teacher for the past ten years. During that time he was part of student reading programs at several school districts. Joe saw that many books that students choose to read had little said about family values, and personal accountability.

Joe has children and grandchildren so these things became important in his own work. Children do and say amazing things that often make great stories that are fun to read. The children in his stories are from his own family.

They live a nice life in the country with animals and the wonder of nature around them. This was the start of the Pawpaw's Adventure books. Joe illustrates all his books so each one is a labor of love. He first sees the pictures, and then the details of the stories unfold around them. Joe is excited about the new Kindle devices so more people will read that might not like toting around a big stack of books.

No matter what, people that read are happier and healthier in the long run. The best medicine is to take some time to read a good book and relax from the troubles of the world for a while.
